Default blew oil pump on 04 disco 2 today! Need advice!

oil pump blew apart today while accelerating. Had to drive about a half mile with the oil light on to get to a place to pull over. Take a look at the pics. Would the engine be toast? Or can I throw on another front cover and oil pump and be good to go? Please help! Thanks.

Pull a rod cap and look it over, you're that far anyway.

What do you mean I'm that far away? An pulling a rod cap won't tell me what a main bearing or cam bearing looks like though. But I guess if rod bearings are hurting so are the others

You're that far [into the engine] ANYWAY, meaning that you already have the oil pan off so pulling a rod bearing cap to inspect it isn't a big deal.

Check the crank, polish it, hone cylinders, new rings , and do a full bearing rebuild.....engine is not toast ....maybe...

Main bearings almost never show any wear, cam bearings even less. You can pop a center main bearing cap and look pretty easy, the lower bearings are the only ones that wear. How many miles? I doubt any serious damage was done, sounds like you did not go that far. Assuming it does not look too bad, throw rod bearings in it, new front cover, start it up and check oil pressure.

Just curious... What kind of oil filter did you have on it? Short or long filter?

How does this happen and can it be prevented? I often drive into far flung places with the Disco for work and would be in a bit of a bind, to say the least, if this happened out in the field.
