Default Bought used, time for first oil change

Bought an '04 Disco II used about 2 months or so ago. Time for the first oil change. I have no idea what was used as far as synth oil or not. Got just a tad over 53,000 miles on it. Any suggestions??

Me personally I usually use either 6 quarts mobil 1 5w40 TDT or Shell Rotella T6 5w40. They are both heavy duty engine oils and are dual rated for diesel and gas engines. The Rotella T6 is the new formulation and should coming on the shelves now. The old Rotella T 5w40 is good too. For filters I either use Mobil 1 301 or Napa Gold (Wix) 1515 filters.

Ditto!!
Also because of the age of your truck, you need to do the Major 60K to get your truck current.
How mechanical are you?

Follow the good advice above, and remember ....not all oils are created equall. There are a lot of 5w40 oils on the market now but not all of them are actually suited for the Rover engines . Stick with a heavy duty oil such as above.

What are everyones thoughts on Royal Purple? I used it in both of my mercedes 240D and also my VW Beetle TDI. Its very expensive but seems to work well in all weather conditions.

Yes both of the 240's were stick. Had to be, even so 0-60 was like 30 seconds no joke. Basically bulletproof engines though.

Here is a vid I made running 100% biodiesel I made from chinese restaurant fryer oil. Got rid of them not because of any issues (you could run used motor oil in these cars), but because of the total lack of power. Lots of hills all around me and it got dangerous trying to go up them in the winter, not enough power. If we did it again I would go with 300D's.

Royal purple is good oil but expensive. There are certain oils available at Walmart and on sale at Autozone and Advanced Auto that will protect as well as Royal purple for less money.

Disco Mike~

I read the 60k overhaul and think I am mechanical enough to pull it all off. From my experience reading things on here, seems like there is plenty of help if I get stuck. I'm still about 7,000 away from 60k. I don't really put a lot of miles on the Rover through the week because I commute about 1 hr each way to work. It would kill my wallet in gas, so I drive the 4 banger eco(ish) friendly Harley or Chevy depending on weather. Being in Indiana, I would like to wait until I actually reach 60k to perform the big service since its colder than a well diggers @## right now, and it will probably take me 3 more months or so to hit 60k. Not much heat in the shop, but enough to do oil changes and such to get me by.

Should I do the engine flush since I have no idea what the previous owner was running and replace with mobil 1 5w40 TDT or Shell Rotella T6 5w40?
