Brake Fluid Leak
I have a 1998 D1. I am noticing brake fluid is leaking from under the brake reservoir. What do I need to do to resolve this problem? Looks like two grommets are under there but cannot figure out what needs to be replaced. Thanks
you have 2 choices, the cheap choice is replacing just the reservoir kit and the second choice is the full master cylinder assembly. if the brakes are working well and it is just the rubber grommets leaking (more when you move the reservoir) I would say the first choice is the best way to go. I ran into this problem a few months back and found out the 2 grommets can be purchased through Audi but I then learned it is NOT a good idea to get just the grommets, get the kit it will save you a huge headache!
here is the kit:http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/STC2904.cfm

I would not say 99 is cheap, but I may just get the whole assembly because I will be stuck with paying 199 if the 99 dollar reservoir does not fix the problem. I have noticed the brake pedal does go farther down to the floor when not primed. If I am driving and push the brake pedal once, it goes down farther, but if I push it again, it is firmer. Mike, can I bleed the system from the brakes or do I have to activate the ABS module?
My bike suggests using DOT4. Check your manual for the type that your bike needs, it might say it on the resivour cap. You can use Prestone, Silkolene or whatever is available as long as it is the correct type. It does not need to be motorcycle brake fluid. I recomend Motul600 it is pretty good stuff for 15 a bottle its not too expensive either.
Perfect! Thanks for the link. I had the exact same problem and didn't want to replace the whole assy just to fix a simple leak below the reservoir. Couldn't find a link to that reservoir anywhere and none of the parts guys here in AZ had the reservoir as a separate item. Of course the dealer said that "it wasn't available" but I never pay any attention to them any more.
Your link showed me the way to the DII "kit".
