Brakes and Rotors at 30K
 

A used car dealer that sells Land Rovers is telling me that all Discoveries need new brakes and new rotors at 30,000 miles. Is he correct????[8D]

No he is not correct.
Rovers are a little weak in the brake area, it would b great if they used slightly larger rotors.
At 30K, it is possible you may need front pads, but as long as the truck has not been run hard you won't need rotors until the second or possibly third brake job.

Mine needed new rear pads and rotors at 33K. The previous owner had used it almost exclusively for commuting in stop and go freeway traffic. Got 70K out of the original front rotors. Now I have DBA rotors all around and the seem to be wearing very well.

I just replaced all 4 pads and rotors at 30k miles... Pads were wearing and they suck anyhow, so figured I'd take the chance to upgrade...

Unfortunetley no respectable rotor company makes aftermarket rotors for a Disco, so I bought 4 rotors from the dealer, and then bought some AXXIS Ultimate brake pads. stopping power is gretaly improved, and the pads are basically no dust also...

My 2004 Disco just hit 36,000 and I replaced both front and rear.

If you drive your Rover anywhere like your BMW, they probably would wear out early. Too bad you didn't find any information about DBA slotted and drilled rotors, I have nearly 60K on mine along with the Kevlar pads.
There are choices out there.

I saw the DBA slotted rotors... I talked with a few brake experts, who convinced me that the best (and very limited oiptions) for the Disco were to just stick with stock for the rotors...

Oh, i could have gotten more life out of the rotors--the pads were kind of worn, so I figured itd be better to replace the rotors while I was doing the pad, as opposed to grinding them down...

But yeah, I don't drive the Rover anything like the 3... I'd flip it. ;)

Well, so much for the brake experts. When trying to find information on Rovers go to the Rover owners on the forums and see what they have been having the best luck with. DBA's hold up so much longer giving much better stopping power over Rover rotors.
By the way, you can not resurface Rover rotors, the material is too soft and there is not enough thickness to do the usuall 2 cuts to refinish them.

I wish I'd known about these forums when we bought the Disco2 initially... Although other than the brakes i haven't had to do much to the car yet... In a few years I'll imagine that it will become much more useful as the car gets older and the warranty runs out...

BTW, the brake expert I spoke with was Dave Zeckhausen, from NJ: http://www.zeckhausen.com/ He was one of the original founders of UUC Motorwerks back in the day, and is pretty highly regarded... Anyhow, StopTech now makes rotors for the Disco which would be a nice replacement alternative

DBA rotors out of Austriala have been the best rotor available for Rovers over the last 3 or 4 years especially when being used along with Kevlar pads.
