Default Broken Window Still Works

Driving today with the windows down, reached our destination and go to roll the front passenger window up. We heard a loud pop as the window reached the top and it stopped with about a 1/4” gap. It wouldn’t really move up and down fully and looked crooked.

Anyway I get home and take the door panel off. I was able to get the window down with a lot of wiggling and play. I found this broken gear just sitting in the track. I picked it out and now the window will roll up freely all the way.

I guess my question is does anyone know what this was that broke? The window appears to function without it, but I’m not sure how long that will last. I don’t even know where the other half is.

That's one of the two nylon rollers that fit in the window rail of your regulator. You may be able to get along for awhile but you're going to need to replace the regulator at some point. Luckily, they are pretty cheap these days and installation is pretty straightforward.

I would replace them with an aftermarket metal roller. Those plastic bits are notorious for breaking.

Sadly this was the front window. It didn't look easy to get to.

Do the metal rollers move as freely? I'm curious how many people swap them out.

I’d replace the entire regulator. I went with replacing the rollers and couple years later had to replace the regulator anyway. It’s a pretty easy job and I expect the new regulator to last the same length of time as the original, 18 or so years.
