Question To Buy or Not To Buy

hey guys. here's the deal. I found a 2001 Disco II SE7 with 3rdrow with 113k for $7995.
here's the facts
- 2 owners, both had all service/work done at the LR dealer from which it was purchased
- clean carfax, no wrecks or insurance claims
- had a new CPU at 7100
- abs checked at 25k
- new headliner at 28k
- new batteries from 30-40k
- new pullies and belts at 70k
- new abs module last week, at 113k
- literally this car is spotless inside and out with *minimal/no* interior wear or stains, engine bay is spotless and exterior has almost no fading/damage. immaculately kept

I'm new to these but I've read a lot and have been torn over this for weeks. I graduate college in may and I'll either be in law school or working 20min away from where I live. I'm within 30min from 2 LR dealers and a great import shop that does work on them as well. I'm not afraid of the gas milage, I just need an honest opinion from the people who would know best. thanks!

Not sure where you are located but that would be a little high in my area..even for immaculate. You might want to 1) check to see if drive shaft has been rebuilt but not a deal breaker because easy enough 2) has this vehicle had head gaskets done at any time. There is a write up at the first page of the forum of things to look for when buying one of these trucks. Good reading. I have 2 Disco's and love em both.

Default Unless you have deep pockets

Service history is BIG with these, so you've found a good start. My .02, I wouldn't buy it unless you have 1k-2k $ extra on the side. Especially since it sounds like you won't be doing any of the work or repairs yourself and will be very busy with law school, etc, and it will probably be your driver.

It could be a fantastic car and give you little to no issues, but you've got to give yourself some room/space for repairs and stay up on the maintenance.

Two things that might come up awfully soon even with that immaculate history: front driveshaft being rebuilt, and head gaskets. Front driveshaft can be rebuilt for about $200 at any driveline/muffler shop. Head gaskets will cost you around $2k, maybe more.

Also, that seems a bit high for a 01 with that mileage EVEN with that history, IMO.

8,000 is way too much. You could land a good 2004 for that. Go for 6,500. I'm sure the owner put a lot of money into that truck but the fact is that these things don't resale that well. My 2003's interior is pretty much immaculate with a new paint job on the body and there's no way I'd get 8,000 for it.

if the headgaskets were done and the drive shaft rebuilt i would offer $4000. otherwise its worth about $1000 in my book.

You'd be amazed how good a pressure washer, a vacuum cleaner, and a bottle of Armorall will make a average truck look. Sounds like the last major work done was close to 40K miles ago.

-ABS "checked" at 25K? I wouldn't qualify that as service.
-New batterIES from 30-40K? What the eff does that mean? Why did it need batterIES, and not just A batterY?

I agree with above that $4,000 would be reasonable. Don't forget, it's a 10 year old truck with over 100K miles and sounds like the HG have not been done.

it had the gaskets done around 60k, forgot to list that. unfortunately, it's at a local dealer, hour north of dallas and they won't come down on the price bc they bought it for $7000 and then the abs light came on, they took it to a LR dealer and paid the $2k to replace the abs. I'm ok with paying a bit more bc they had the reg scheduled main done and the unit replaced. I would have been stuck with that if I bought it 2 weeks ago.

that might be foolish.

thanks for the page suggestion..I'll read through that.

There's no way the dealer paid $7K and $8K is too much, move on....

It's probably a good truck but I wouldn't pay that much personally. You could probably get an 04 for that kind of money.

Yeah, discos are a dime a dozen in dallas. that's where I bought my 03, for much less than that, a year ago. of course, mine is just an S with no sun roofs, but that's what I was looking for.
