Default To Buy or not to Buy for that is the question

Hey guys the LR Discovery has been a dream vehicle of mine. There’s one here in town for 1K it’s a 2002 Disco II safari edition with 80K miles on it. It had a blown head gasket. I know I can do the repairs but I wanted someone else’s thoughts on purchasing. 17 year old disco? Thanks

If you are not scared of a Head Gasket Job you are a good candidate for DII ownership.

There will be fixes like window regulators, wiper motors etc., but if you maintain it well, especially the cooling system, you’ll be fine.

Redwhitekat I have read several forums and have seen where people have dropped 50k on their disco II I just don’t want to do that. I want a daily driver that looks nice is reliable and my precious modified Tacoma can become a designated off-road vehicle.

No not scared of a head gasket and I’ll take the head in to be checked seems like several forums show this vehicle blows head gaskets about every 100k miles which seems odd. The ones I’ve seen in Africa have had exhaust temp gauges and snorkels so they take in cooler air might be something I consider. Thanks for your input.

The ones in Africa are probably diesel engine vehicles... But best of luck, you will spend several more thousand, maybe not 50k but as I always say, plan on 2k per year in maintenance, Some years you will need more other years yow wont need much, but it will average out to that much over time. The more you do yourself the less it will be costing of course.

They make great yard art!

If you took that same amount of money and bought scratch off lottery tickets you'd be way ahead even if you LOST on every one.

I remember when I asked this question, then a month ago I bought one and two weeks later the motor is garbage. Now I'm out a few thousand dollars and regret this pile of **** but the wife just HAD to have a Disco2. I hope she enjoyed both weeks fully.

Now I get to decide if it's worth swapping a better motor into it etc.

BTW, forgot to ask - where are you located? Sell it to me?
