Happy holidays. I moved to Portland (from SF) earlier this year.

I have also been looking for something but have found nothing that protects. I don't think that skid plate would do much (looked at it online myself already). All ears if folks here can surface something that works.

My story aka "I got lucky..." ---- About 6 weeks ago, at 1am, in bed heard noises, bloodhounds up at the window whinnying. I caught guys outside my house with an angle grinder in hand looking at my Disco. They didn't see me on my porch. I listened. Yelled. Then a long story that then involved lots of interaction (the best line being "man I'm just playing with my new angle grinder" ) and me chasing them in their car. They didn't touch the Disco, I was not in my Disco, I was in a considerably faster M4. There was thhen a sighting on Next Door of the same car (I got plates, called cops etc) -- then I got banned from NextDoor when I called the cops on them. The neighbors figured out the 2 guys lived TWO BLOCKS from my house in a super shady distressed old house.

Yes I am an idiot but I will not stand for this... Cat theft is happening a lot now.

I just had my cats stolen from my Disco 1 in SF (street parked) over the July 4 weekend (cut through the Y-pipe on both sides of the cat). State Farm initially was going to total it. I explained that it is becoming a "classic" vehicle (especially the manual trans). I just learned they will cover it (kudos for them). Not sure how to protect the new cats once installed (street parking, no garage). My guess is the cable version may provide some deterrence, but it depends on how effectively it blocks a sawzall upstream of the cats (down stream is no hope, they can easily cut closer to the center muffler if necessary. CARB replacement y-pipe with cats are expensive, over $2000 for the part). Also considered using a wireless motion detector, but apparently they can cut them out in about 2 minutes, so doubtful I would be able to get there in time.

Where can I park mine so they get stolen? I'll even remove the O2 sensors so the wires don't get ripped out..

Mine are leaking, they aren't worth anything to me.

Go here & ask for Danny (tell him Anil sent you) - he had a custom plate made to protect the cat converter - so if they end up below your car, they won't have anything to cut: https://www.yelp.com/biz/007-motorsport-san-mateo

Not sure how it works state to state but you might be able to sell for scrap legally if you have the title and would be willing to provide ID at time of sale. I was told the LR cats are desirable because they have more precious metal to meet EU specs. Not sure if it's true or not.

I just sold mine for $1,250 for scrap.replaced them with some magna flows I got for $650 (mechanic hooked me up at shop cost) OEM units are valuable. that's 2x what they were worth last year. leaking or clogged, it doesn't matter. it's the metal inside and they crush and melt the cats to retrieve the metals for resale.

I just had an attempted theft, but still cost $3k+ to replace. They cut 1/4" into downpipe and stopped. I assume my dogs spooked them, or the lights came on, but suffice to say it rendered the cat in the difficult to repair came. Sounded like a tuba.

A question is then, what is the market for a working cat with decent piping? I have photos and video, to document I am the lawful owner to sell the part.

drive it to a muffler shop and have them weld it back up. A couple hundred bucks and you’re set.

they are going for $600-$800 per aide right now at a recycler for original cats. Aftermarket cats have less precious metals in them

for OEM Genuine Land Rover cats, yes. I sold mine for $1250 about 2 months ago. Paid $650 for a new y pipe and put the rest into some other parts. It worked out nicely for me. My driver side was clogged.
