Default CE CODE P0420

Check Engine Code, P0410.. Was told it relates to exuast leak between catalatik converter and manafold? something about the OBII sensor and there being differnt temps between the from and the back, a big change. Also dont have good heat, but having him replace my thermostat. And he is going to clear my codes, he couldnt find any leak. Anyone have anything to say?

You need to decide, do you have a 410 or a 420 fault code?

Bank 1, drivers side, cat is below standards.
How many miles on the engine, have the 02's been changed, have you recently had a head gasket failure???

Red face I have the same issue.

I first got a code for the VSS...replaced that (about three weeks ago). Then got the code for the O2 sensor(s)...replaced all four (about two weeks ago). NOW I get P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). Does this mean I have to replace the converter(s)? BTW: my truck is a '99 Disco Series I w/163K on it.

Thanks!

Yes, the engine has been running poorly for a while which will slowly kill a cat. Go to a local muffler shop and have 2 aftermarket cats install, it is pretty cheap to do, then it will run great.

My truck throws 1447 code - EVAP purge valve fault on a regular basis and once in a while just to really irk me it will throw the same 0420 code the OP is having. My driver's side cat was replaced by a previous owner. It's pretty obvious looking at it that it was an aftermarket. My truck actually runs well so I am going to replace my 2 forward O2 sensors before I lay out the money for new cats.

I am getting a EVAP purge this weekend. A guy locally is parting out a 97 Disco with 54000 miles on it. Insurance totaled it when the original owner's wife caught him cheating and proceeded to back her Suburban in to the front end repeatedly.

Mike,
I heard something that an exhaust leak at the converter can cause this fault code (I get P0420 twice). I'm nearly 100% sure I DO have an exhaust leak. Would you still say it's the cats, though? I just find it amazing that I get the code for the VSS, and a week later the Check Engine light comes on again with the O2 sensor code, and again the following week I get the code for the converter(s).

I just had the gasket replaced and put new plugs and wires on my 2002 Disco 2. Now, 2 days later, check engine light on and code PO420.
