Centering ball kit for 1310 front driveshaft
 

Hey guys,

I searched all over the place but couldn't find the part numbers. I have my front drive shaft all apart on my work bench. Turns out that one of the previous owners of my D2 must have replaced my stock front drive shaft with a 1310 series heavy duty unit. It's a 2001 SE with 100,900 on it. I found the part numbers for the u joints, but have been unable to locate the part number for the centering ball kit for the 1310. From what I can tell, the actual ball and sleeve are the same as the 1300 series precision 617, but the difference lies in the dust cover. In the 1300 series, the dust cover goes inside the yoke, whereas the 1310 series covers the yoke. Am I crazy here or is that a sound assessment?

Kit PN depends on the make of the center yoke and whether it's greaseable or not.

In the photo below, there is a removable plug (which I have removed) that looks to be a grease injection point. It comes out right below the ball where grease would normally sit. I'm assuming htat would make it greaseable?

i looked all over the yoke for some type of markings to find a model number, but the only markings I could find on there said either 31B or 13B. Something like that. Sorry for the vague-ness, I don't have the yoke in front of me. I can be more specific when I get home. Of course, I wrote it down and forgot my note at home as well.

I do have a picture of of the center part of the double-cardon that has the model number of that part on it, but I wasn't sure if the yoke would be part of a "set" or if it can be joined with different parts.

I don't know if the above picture helps or not. Would measurements of the outer dimensions or the dust cap flange help?

Thanks again for your help. This is my first drive shaft rebuild, so I'm sort of a newbie (driveshafts and land rover ownership). Sorry for my vague/un-educated response. I'm sure they'll get clearer as I learn more. :-)

Odds are good you can get the kit from Tom Woods.
You could get it locally if you knew for sure what PN you need, but at this point, unless someone else knows, I'd just give TW a call and order the kit from him.

A driveline shop could tell you, but they'd want as much, if not more, for the kit than TW plus you'd have your time and gas going to get it.

Ok, sounds good. I will give Tom a call. I live kind of out in the boonies, so there aren't really any driveline shops close to me.

I just talked to someone at Tom Woods. It sounds like it's a greaseable yoke with a needle fitting. The centering ball kit that I'd need would be the Rockford 404-0 or a Neapco 7-0081(G). I can't find the comparable Precision/Moog part number. Tom Woods doesn't sell the centering ball kit by itself, but they do sell the entire yoke/ball/flange set with the ball already pressed in for about $90. To order the flange/yoke/ball combo, they'd need the pilot dimensions and the hole spacing dimensions.

Well, if they are correct and that's the Rockford number, then the Precision number is 612 and the Neapco is 7-0081 (not the same as 7-0081NG).

Would you recommend a traditional zerk in the cross or a needle zerk in the endcap? The endcap zerk would make it easier, but are the needle zerks a pain to use? I've only ever dealt with traditional zerks.

I'm going to attempt the same thing and need to order my parts, where do I find Tom Woods number, I live in New Mexico!
