Default Changing fluids

So I bought a a 03 Disco back in April, and I had to have a bunch of work done on it, because the previous owner did not take care of it at all. So knowing this, I am wanting to change out all the fluids, transmission, both diffs and engine oil. I had the transfer case done in May, so no need to do that. Which I called my Land Rover Mechanic and he priced me to about 350 for all three. Is that about right for changing all three of those out?

So you are looking at having both diffs and the transmisison done?
$350 at a LR shop sounds about right, but you cna save money if you take it to a quick lube, they will do both diffs for about $100 and the transmission for about $100 too.

If you want to do it all for under $100 we can walk you trough it.
Look at the stickys on the top of the forum page and find the "transmission" one and read though it and see if you can handle it.

I just did both diff's and transfer case and replaced my front driveshaft in less that two hours. Easy DIY.

I just actually got done this evening with changing my differentials and Transfer box, took a couple hours. Changed my transmission fluid last weekend in about an hour. $350 is a lot of money when it can be done with $90 worth of fluid and 3 hours of your day.

That's just me though I hate paying people lots of money to do things that are easy.

Do it yourself and use the money you save to get some magnecore spark plug wires and new spark plugs. You can do it with the help of this forum. Changing the fluids is easy.

Well I would do it myself, but I simply dont have the time and the pavement in Arizona right now is a bit hot for crawling under a car right now. But what is this about rebuilding the front driveshaft? I have read about it in here a few times. How much is this going to cost me?

I don't know exactly in your area but ballpark $250, make sure they replace the centering ball also.

It'll cost you anywhere from $6,000 to $7,000 for a new Transmission if that front shaft fails, have a driveline shop rebuild it with Greasable u-joints. and while its up on a lift,
have a look at the rubber disc in the rear driveshaft, check for cracks in the rubber.
thats about a $75 part, the shaft rebuild could be $200, a new shaft with greasable ujoints thru tom woods is about 400.
good luck alpine!

Okay, well I went and took a look at the underside of my disco and to see if I could see some type of wear in the driveshaft, which I could not really get under there (At work in work clothing...), but I dont really have a idea what I am looking for. Anyone have any pics of the drive shaft components that fail, that I need to look at for wear? Also I think I have another oil leak, there is oil dripping from around the tranmission area. Same as before I had all the work done, head gasket, valve cover gasket, some o-rings around the oil filter, and transfer case resealed. Not knowing the look of my tranny fluid, I am guessing it is a leak from the engine somewhere, but thankfully it is small for now. Also one last question for you, how do you check the tranny fluid, I can not find the dip stick? This is my first foriegn vehicle, and my dad and I have no idea where the tranny dip stick is?
