Default chevy diesel conversion

yeah I know we talk about swapping in a diesel all the time, but has anybody done the chevy diesel swap? There's a guy on my local LR forum that is putting one in a D1. He's using the 6.2L but I would of gone with the 6.5L. He picked it up from a army base (engine is used in humvees) I remember seeing the adapter kit for this conversion a while back. Its $1k for the transmission kit and $150 for the engine mounts. He claims the engine doesn't weigh as much as other diesels of similar size.

Do some searching on the high failure rate of both of those 2 engines, they are very high and heavy, beside the D2 won't take one cause your tranny needs the engine's ECU to operate from.

Any diesel is going to have a cast iron block and heads to handle the high compression ratio.
Even if it was the same size as the Rover V8 it would still weigh a ton more.

mike, I don't see any reviews out of the ordinary for failure rate. My experience has been these engines are dependable but the 6.2 is under powered. I'm not very familiar with the 6.5. I wasn't considering putting one in my DII, just think it might make a good engine for a future D1 project.

spike, the 6.6L version of this engine has aluminum heads, but yeah the 6.2 and 6.5 are cast iron. It looks like they weigh between 900-1100lbs. It will be interesting to see what kind of suspension this guy uses up front.

I have a few friends in the military who can tell you horror stories about the 6.5 failure rate in hummers.

So I am confused, are you wanting to install one in your D2 or a D1? Remember, can't be done with a D2 because of the computers.

And, for my part: why not just do a TD5 conversion? I can understand wanting to go stinker, but not going out of marque when there's an available diesel designed for the car...

I have the 6.2 in my scout that I swaped in. I realy like the way it runs and drives for the most part. The Turbo 6.5 would be more powerfull but that is a very wide version because of the exhaust manifolds and Turbo hangin off the side of it. Because of the 6.2 being NA I would say that it would be the more dependable engine even thought they are almost the same motor minus the turbo. Having the 6.2 or 6.5 in a realitivly light Discovery compaired to a Hummer would prolly net you around 20mpg. Last time I checked I was getting a touch above that in my scout with 33" tires and a 3.54 gear.

Why not just find a 5.7 Olds diesel that will bolt up to the D1 tranny and really give you fits with reliability? Not even I want a diesel that bad. I am more of a BMW M51 kinda thinker. Bolts up to the 4HP22 and all.
