Default Cold start clatter, whats normal?

Just wondering how much noise is normal on cold startup? When I start my '03 in the morning after it has sat all night it seems to make a lot of top end clatter for about 30 sec or so. When starting it warm or if it has been started recently it doesnt make any noise at all. The oil light goes out instantly upon startup maybe .5-1 sec. Im running rotella synthetic 5w-40 and the mobil 1 301 filter. And air temp doesnt seem to be much of a factor, seems about the same noise cold air or not. It seems more a product of sitting all night. Any thoughts? Do I need a heavier oil?

Thanks-jon

my '96 disco does the same thing. loud valve tick for about 30 seconds after a cold start. once it's warm, not a chirp. i think it's fairly normal. i'm using 10w-30.

thanks for reply. I think it wouldnt seem so loud if it wasnt for the high idle that it does for about 30 sec at startup.

So, I guess the verdict is these engines have a noisy top end when first started cold?

Also...you may want to have your oil pressure checked. Do a search and there are many posts on the oil pressure issues for 03's. Just to be safe.

What oil filter are you using? Some cheaper filters do not have an anti drain back valve.

Mine is silent on start up. Pretty much the only time it IS silent!!! This includes twice in the last month sitting in below freezing airport parking lots for 4 days at a time!
