Cold Weathr Observations
So it has been single digits the last few days and couple things happened. The engine ticking or rattling at idle is gone. Car is completely quiet, even after warming up and being driven. Does that point towards a source for the rattle?
The guy I bought it from says it is the lifters, and he seems pretty honest. Plus , he just had the dealer do the heads for $8,000. Maybe the dealer lied to him?
Second, the trans takes a fractions of a second to engage in the morning what it is one degree, much warmer and no issues. I have been planning on changing the filter, is this part of the issue?
thanks,

As far as the trans goes the filter wouldn't do much to fix it. If the fluid isn't warmed up I would halfway say that normal. Always a good idea to give the car a few minutes to warm up and even then take it easy until operating temp is reached. Think of you car fluids like syrup. Cold syrup is thick and doesn't moves as well. As it gets warm it it thins out and moves easier.
Second thing I would say is 8k to do the heads. I hope that included a new motor as that seems excessive. As far as it being lifter noise I will leave that to other to comment. Could be anything from lifters, tensioner, liners, or even exhaust leak.
