coolant temperature readings, to high?
it was about 63f outside when i took the test drive down the high way a few exits. watched temps do about 198f down the high way. when i stopped in the parking lot to watch for idle temps, it went up to 206f to 208f then back down to 206f and stayed there.
i do plan to swap out most of my hoses and do a flush and install the 180 soft spring thermostat soon. but just got this scanner tool to read the coolant temps and so wanted to do a before and after is all. see what improvements the lower temp thermostat will do for me.
so are those about average temps?

Those temps seem about right, before you've put in your 'genuine' 180 deg stat.
After I would expect to see those drop to 197-200 at idle. That's exactly where mine ended up.
I'm installing an inline system this weekend, if all the bits turn up. Idea being that it stops the spikes so much.

You need this

not the white, cheaper one.
Edit. Hmmn. Looks like this is the same item for 50% less.

I'd give them a call and check.

My temps were similar to yours soon after purchase. Largest coolant temp reduction came after a thorough drain/flush/cleansing of the cooling system. A couple of weeks later went with the PEM100990 Eurospare branded thermostat, it's 180 rated and available from the mid $20. Been good to me so far and dropped my temps an additional 5 degrees to 188 at cruise. Replaced pump/fan/clutch due to age/mileage as PM item with no temp change noted.
Many do recommend the genuine grey Land Rover 180 thermostat which apparently has a soft spring. Assume that may enhance the bypass valve operation prior to opening. If funds no object and want the best go for that one.

I have had good luck with proline products (rear wiper arm, window regulators) so I am planning on buying one of those at some point. Like you said, it ends up being about half the price of the OEM 180 stat. If anybody has one, please share your experience.

The cheaper one is a ProLine branded stat. It is gray and still a 180 stat.
