Question Couple of Dumb Questions

I'm new to the Disco and have a couple of questions I can't find answers for on the web.

1. What does the button that looks like a picnic table laid across the road do?

2. How do you turn on the cruise control?

3. And what does the "MODE" button do on the center console aft of the automatic trans shifter? A sprocket with an 'S' in the middle of it illuminates on the gauge cluster when I push it but nothing else happens that I can tell. I thought this might be the cruise control switch but the CC doesn't hold after hitting the 'SET' button on the steering wheel.

I have a 2000 Disco II and the guy I bought it from gave me a 1997 owner's manual. I didn't realize this until I was driving home from Dallas. So I have a 97 owner's manual if anyone needs it and I'm looking for a 2000 owner's manual if anyone has one.

Welcome to the Jungle. Download a copy of the RAVE manual. It will have the owner's manual as well as the shop repair manual. There should be a link in the stickies at the top of the page. The button you speak of is the on/off switch for the cruise control. Push the button, wait for it to illuminate and then use the steering wheel controls. Some people leave the main button depressed all the time and then only use the steering wheel controls. I don't have that much faith in LR electronics. I usually only use it when the cruise is being used.

First thing, check your front driveshaft. Make sure that all three of the u-joints have been replaced with those with zerk fittings. If they haven't have it rebuilt. It should run you about $200 to have it done. If not, you may loose your transmission when the ds comes apart.

Take a look at the 60k miles service recommendations and have fun.

Phil

"1. What does the button that looks like a picnic table laid across the road do?"

that is the button that activates cruise control...press it, then you can use the cruise buttons on the steering wheel

"2. How do you turn on the cruise control?"

see above answer :+)

"3. And what does the "MODE" button do on the center console aft of the automatic trans shifter? that is the "sport" mode for the transmission, changes the shift points for the transmission...feels more "sporty" with it on...i keep it on all the time except when driving at high speed

i'm in Dallas right now, just took a road trip from NY, heading back in a day or 2

1. lol, that's a bridge over a highway.... cruise control
2. I guess you figured that one out now. Hit the cruise control button on the dash, then click the set button on the steering wheel. On the right side of the steering wheel hub you get the cruise control buttons. Hit the brakes or push the dash switch again to disable cruise control.
3. In H the mode button gives you S for sport mode, in L it gives you M for manual mode. This determines how the automatic transmission shifts. For normal driving you will leave it in normal mode. You can feel the difference when you put it in S mode and punch the gas.

Cruise control ahs a button on the right side of the dash under the rear wiper button. Looks like a road with a line on it, then you press the plus on the right side of the wheel and it is set. The M for mode is sport mode. It makes the gs more responsive. I am sure there is a more detailed description. Download the rave workshop guide for free. A lot of the guys on here have them posted in the signature sections.

That's a BRIDGE??? Wow.

Thanks for the help guys. I down loaded the RAVE yesterday and I'm still trying to figure out how to use it. Thing made me feel "a little slow".

I can't wait to try out my cruise for the first time. The info would have been good on that first drive back.

"Sport" mode - that's funny.

And I was all under the truck this weekend changing oil and doing a general check. I didn't see any grease zerts (or zerks - I don't think these have a real name or at least not one used by everyone). So looks like I'll be doing a little upgrade action. I have a real bang up mechanic that works on my Porsche for me here in town and he'll prolly know what needs to be upgraded. He did a great job of keeping me from buying one of these that looked good on the outside but was a wreck under the hood.

FYI the manual mode allows you to shift gears manually when in LOW, can be used for off-roading. start in 1 and work your way up. like everyone else said. do your maitenance and read the rave. good luck.

I wish when I pushed my SPort Mode the floorboard would open so I could do that Fred Flintstone thing and Yabba Dabba Doo.
