Default Couple of questions

First I have to say that I have become addicted to this forum, and just wanted to say thanks as I am learning alot more than I thoughtI would and somethings that scare the crap out of me. I have been watching the disco like a hawk, listening for any strange sounds, looking for puddles underneath, and hoping that nothing crops up, I have had mine for a couple weeks now. Well enough if that on to my questions:

Number 1
I change the oil this past weekend and I installed a K&N filter with a syn blend, I want to use the blend for the next couple of changes and then go full syn, do you see any problem with this approach. ( is there a special K&N filter as I see the number 3001 on alot of post I just used the K&N listed for my disco by advanced auto)

Number 2
I have been reseaching this issue with a couple of my door locks which will only superlock and will not unlock with the key fob or the inside lock button any ideas on this? I have not found much other than the BCU???? change the actuators in the doors

Use the 3001 K&N filter next time, or the Mobil 1-301. Both are really goos and both are larger tghen the factory filter giving you more filtering media for cleaner oil.

I was told that the K&N AIRfilter will destroy your mass air flow sensor. Whether this is true or not, I have not bothered to find out...just figured I'd save myself the time, effort and potential hassle of replacing the sensor should the advice be correct.

My buddy who is a full-time mechanic said that synthetic would probably be worthwhile if it was used in an engine from the very beginning. His opinion is, replacing conventional oil with synthetic oil is probably riskier than the possible returns are worth.

As far as your #2 issue, I think you're on the right track. If the doors wouldn't unluck with the remote control, I've heard this can be a programming issue. But if the inside switch isn't working than maybe it's the actuators. Shouldn't be too difficult to test this out...the downside is tearing a door apart isn't much fun usually and they can be a bear to get back together.

I will do some more research on the oil it might be that I stick with just a blend, as I have heard conflicting stories on this topic. It is about as bad as discussing Politics

I have had my K&N air filter for over two years with no problems. I have re-oiled it twice. Plus on the K&N website, they say that if their product caused any damage to your MAF they will replace it.

Don't worry about switching over, just do it. This will be one of the best things you can do to your engine other then doing a good engine flush prior to your next oil change.
How often are you changing your oil?
I understand your buddy is a Guote, FULL TIME mechanic, be has has alot of learning to do. I would suggest you listen to people who have alot more expreience when it comes to your engine.

Mike,
I've spoken to you on the phone several times and I always appreciate your insight and knowledge.

The statements that I have posted on this forum are not to try to undermine anyone's opinions or experiences, it's simply an attempt at sharing knowledge...even if it comes at the expense of going against the grain.

In all honesty, it's my opinion that the type of oil probably doesn't matter all too much as long as there is enough in the motor. It's one of those things that you can never really know or tell how the decision impacted the motor because there is no control in the experiment...know what I mean?

I understood ( I could be wrong) that if you use conventional oil for the trucks life, then after...say...100k miles you switch to full synthetic, it will clean out the inside, journals and all ... to include any built up residue where a compromise has occured - thus causing a leak where(undamaging) depositsonce filled a hole.

Unstable, I know where you're coming from when posting your point of vue or your own personal experience. No one here should be shy to post opinions that go against the general consensus, since most of the time the so called GENERAL consensus is built up with others opinions and not personal experience.

I personnally feel strongly about certain subjects, and do not hesitate to post my point of view when they come up. But one gets tired of repeating over and over again since these subjects keep coming up on an almost daily basis. So lately I just let those subject go by without butting in.

On the subject at hand, I feel that switching to full synthetic is what I prone and do, since I strongly feel that oil that doesn't liquify with warmer temperatures or thickens with colder temps can only be a plus for any engine. I also use the K&N 3001 oil filter because Ihave read lots of good things about it.

As far as the K&N air filter issue goes, tons of people will swear that it destroy mafs, and 95 % of these people took position upon earsay and not personal experience. I personally had a K&N filter for about 2 weeks and took it out when I read all the warnings because my truck was new to me and I had a fairly long list of things to doon it without adding a new maf to that list. But now that the truck is in like new condition and with the price of gas, I'll take the mile per gallon that the K&N will give me. If by badluck the maf goes in a year, I will have saved more money in gas in that year that the maf will cost me new. Especially knowing that from all the people I know in my local club running K&N in their bosch managed Rover, NO ONE has had maf problems and most of them have had them in their Rover for years. In fact, the ones that have had maf problem didn't run K&N. Now to me that's not just hearsay from pseudo self calledspecialists. Its direct experiences from Rover friends.

Rover on.

I just switched to full synthetic and have not had any problems yet. I am wondering how often others with full syn change their oil however. I know you can go approx 15,000 or so miles between changes (according to the bottle) but I don't want to go that long as the filter will probably be collecting debris and build up from 80,000 miles of regular oil. Any thoughts? Also I hear all this talk about K&N air filters but I have not heard any good alternatives that will increase air flow etc. What is everyone else using? and are there any that are reusable like the K&N filters?
Other than that I am just getting over the paranoia that new rover owners feel after reading everything that can go wrong with your ride so I know how you feel! Just relax and enjoy your truck with the knowledge that everyone here is more than willing to help, once anything arises.
