Default D1 Thermosat

Are there any quick fixes (temorary) for the thermostat? Can I drill it out or just take it out? I need to drive approx 60 miles tomorrow and I don't think I can get one in before then. I have read a lot about the D2s and have heard of just putting a "t" in place of it but since it is inline on a D1 I didn't know it there was a similar procedure.
Thanks,
Jay

On a DI the t-stat is in the top of the engine, right where the coolant comes out.
Just undo the two bolts, take out the t-stat and bolt it back up.
Be careful to tighten the bolts equally, the "goose neck" is aluminum and will crack it you tighten them wrong.
You can get a t-stat at AutoZone for $12.
It takes a 192*F.
It is a standard t-stat but you will need to get the gasket from the dealer or online, RTV works but not very well.
I suppose you could make your own gasket with the paper gasket stuff from AutoZone.

Thanks spike. I was able to get the thermostat so I am going to try and put it in tonight after work. I got a fail safe from auto zone and youre correct that you have to order the gasket. I am going to use the RTV for now until I can order a new gasket or I may try and use the old one if it isn't fouled up too much. Hopefully this will work or I will be back on here again so everyone can tell me its the radiator. Is there anyway to check if this si the case? The top coolant hose can be pinched almost closed when running so I don't think it is a preasure problem but hell, what do I know. The HG were just replaced by the PO a couple of months ago. I had heard you can open the top radiator bleed screw and look in but won't coolant spray out? Any help is appreciated as my D2 is in need of a new alternator so I only have the D1 to drive.

Yes you can open the fill/bleed screw on the radiator and look inside, as long as the engine is cold anyway.
You may loose some coolant but it wont be much.

Go to autozone, tell them you want a FelPro #12994. Its not listed under a LR Disco, but works perfect. $.99

God help us! I've always thought of this as group therapy where a bunch of people with rover complexes can talk it out. It's nice that there are others battling the same demons lol
