Default D1 w/no cats & no CEL?

Can you gut the cats, remove the o2 sensors (or at least the one after the cat) and run a resistor in the o2 plug to keep the CEL from coming on? How does the D1 run with no o2's? I know in the Turbocharged Subaru world they are runing aftermarket exhaust with no cat. They run a resistor in the plug on the last o2 sensor that regesters a normal reading to the ECU. Anyone know if this could be done? Seems like a low cost solution for someone that needs cats and o2 sensors and lives in a place that doesnt check emissions (I know, terrible).
Just wondering.

It can be can done but why?
Cats are not that much for cheap aftermarket ones.
Discoweb.org has a nice write up on this in their tech section.

I'm definitely not a tree hugger but why do more damage to the environment by running a vehicle without the cats. The government and environmental groups are already trying to get our fuel hogs off the road, let's not give them more reason to do so. For the amount of money you'll spend trying to fool the computer you can get a set of aftermarket cats.

You won't find any positive help on this site for what you are wanting to do.
What do you expect to gain from trying to beat the system?

+1 for high flow cats... cheap and easy to buy and have installed... plus it keeps you legal and will keep emisions down a little...

Please dont get me wrong. I am not wanting to run out and do this. I just have read on other forums (not Land Rover) of people doing this but it has always been in an attempt to gain more horsepower often with a new exhaust and a new ECU map. I havent seen it mentioned here and it makes sense why. I dont think there is anything to gain so like said before, why do it. I am getting some rattling sounds from my exhaust around my cats so replacements may be in the future. I printed off the tech info off discoweb.org and will bring these with me to the exhaust shop if and when the time comes. Just asking questions and making conversation

Things that work on other vehicles don't necessarily work on Rovers as I am sure you have figured out. Of course, that kind of goes both ways. Nothing is going to work for every vehicle. Rattling from the exhaust is more than likely the cats so replacing the cats sounds like the fix.
