Default D2 roof rack, load bars

I'm new to Rovers and have an '04 D2. I've had trucks and Jeeps my entire driving life, and am fairly mechanical... but I can't figure out the intended use of the factory roof rails. I need to come up with a roof rack system that is useful for a variety of activities.

Ideally (I think) I will need load bars for hauling canoes, kayaks, etc. And I would like to have the option of a modular, removable rack/basket to attach to the load bars if the need arises for alot of camping gear, etc. Also, I am not the innovative type and see no need in 're-inventing the wheel' on this project. Anyone have any experience with a setup like this? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Thule makes load bars with gutter mounts. I have a set in my garage that I need to get rid of. I'm in MD and they are too big to ship. If you are near by, you can check them out.
