there is a procedure to synchronise a remote for a 96+, but that only works if the remote has been programed to the car before

Dave,
Tomorrow morning I will be going to the local shop to have the 2nd key programmed. Can you tell me if they need to re-program the first one again as well at that point? I don't have the barcode for that one either, but obviously the VIN of my car as well as the little 6 digit code inside. If they don't need to re-do the original key that is already working, I am good to go. If they do, I would ask you kindly...

Thanks for your help and knowledge! NOBODY seemed to know the answers and I did quite some research online... The dealers I called told me that there is no way, not with the VIN, nor the 6 digits...

Cheers!

if its done right, then no, it wont need to be programmed. only way that it would, is if the key is left in the ignition during programming the new one. if the key is left on, the bcu loses its already stored codes, and only has the newly programmed one. but as long as its not the first time someones doing it, and they are able to read the caution prompts that are on the screen before you enter the barcodes, youll be fine

Well, it wasn't the first time for the tech, but the second barcode I had was 18 characters, not 17. It had an _ (underscore) in it, which it can't have, but when we tried it without the underscore, it still didn't do the trick. Bummer, but maybe Dave will take another look at it.

Going to wash the truck now which is what I was going to do this morning, but I had to take my lab to the doggie ER. She swallowed a needle!

I paid $4.75 for a normal blank at a key shop and had it cut to match my key. they said it would only work to lock and un-lock the doors; but it works for starting too...and no, it hasn't caused me any other problems

I have a question about the fob, is this built into the key or is it separate? the reason I ask is because as an aftermarket security specialist I run into people asking me these questions all the time and I generally tell them if it is a factory remote they have 2 options 1. pay the dealer what he wants or 2. go aftermarket! For just about any vehicle you are looking between $100 - $300 to replace or reprogram a factory remote, and for that money you can actually have an aftermarket alarm system installed that will provide you with better protection and better range than a factory system.

the code i gave you was for that key, it should have worked... two reasons for it not that i can think of are; its a bad remote, did it say 'not rocognized' or 'not seen' when they tested the remote before entering in the code. or posibly not actually a land rover remote, as the pictures above showed, its not too unique of a remote, maybe an aftermarket key that has a different code system. i dont know, ive never had a problem using the barcode i get with the circuit board code
