Denver . Colorado
Hi , I have a 2003 Discovery in the Denver Area. It is on its third engine and needs a head gasket. Does anyone know someone who they would recommend to do the work at a reasonable price. Also needs suspension.,a typical Landrover story I am afraid. Thank You.

Thank You for the Replies , sorry I am new to forums and a little shy. I bought my Discovery 2003 in 2004. The guy I bought it for had already had the engine replaced under warranty. I purchased the extended warranty. A few months later I " threw a rod " and was told everyone would stand by the warranty. Of course they did not do this and I had to replace the engine once more.
The car has never been off road, never trashed and maintained entirely by ther dealer until I purchased it and had to buy a new engine. Fast forward 2 years I am now told that the truck needs 17K worth of repairs which would bring the book value to 5k. They were willing to give me a trade in of 1K , which is less than the cost of the studded snow tyres I had just placed.
I chose to get another car and deal with it when I could afford some repairs. We live at 12000ft in Colorado on a ranch up a road that my friends wont drive. After ending in a ditch a few times this winter and smashing the front of my car when I hit a tree and a stop sign I miss the truck and want to get it going for this winter. I have a 16 yr old that will get her permit in October. I would like to think I could do the work myself but I am a single mom who probably knows more than the average ( since the thing has broken down so often and has been a huge repair issue since Day 1. ) so I am trying to figure out what to do . In every other way the truck looks like new. ( except it does not run !!! ) The labor hourly rate is $150 per hour . The guys I know that will work for less don't want to touch Land Rover and specifically this one since they know its history.
I have too much money into it to walk away. once running we just need it to get " up the hill " around a 5 mile drive and to get the kids to school so no huge trips
Its mileage is 180K on the clock but with two new engines it translates to around 80K on the second new engine so its low. The head gasket, suspension brakes all need replacing.
Thank you, the car is a lemon . Before anyone asks . the dealership and Land Rover North America are not interested in helping. They took the credit card number for the extended warranty but did not process it as the mileage was within 1000 of 50K and they told me was their policy was not to automatically place the warranty without first inspecting the truck. The 2nd engine was needed at around $49, 500 so I was on my own and like a nightmare trying to get anyone to see it my way .
I look forward to to your help. I have a car to use so no rush really . Snow will be here in a few months. Mike we are in the Aspen Snowmass area but can get it down to the Denver area if need be.

There should be no reason for that Discovery to be on it's 3rd engine, they are not that bad of a lemon. Did you ever overheat the engines? Either that or that dealership has some awful mechanics and they are not doing their job. Or they just told you it needed a new engine when it could have been fixed.
Are you sure it is the head gasket leaking? You've got to find an independent mechanic who's going to work in your best interest. Has the most recent engine been overheated, you say it is leaking, was it spotted before overheat? Once pressure tested and inspected, if the heads are not warped then gaskets can just be replaced. I feel bad about your fortune, I almost want to do it for you
17k in repairs? They are out of their damn mind.

Good luck to you, sorry to hear of all your troubles. It would be nice if a few of you Colorado guys could donate a weekend of your labor and knowledge to get this woman's rig up and running. We all know its not the parts but the labor that's going to break her on these repairs. All she needs is a honest mechanic to fix her truck one time the right way. Hope things start looking positive for you soon! Colorado guys?
Shame I don't live closer I would take a look at it for you..
It sounds like they are trying to take advantage of you..
Around here you could pick up 2 maybe even 3.. 2003's for the price of that estimate..
All in good working order..
The other cheaper mechanics won't even look at it?

I'm sorry about all this.
A) No way does it need 17k worth of repairs. If thats the case forget it and buy a low mileage LR3 at the dealer for crying out loud!
B ) They are trying to take advantage of you because your a lady.
C ) Take Disco Mike up on his offer, he's like a God when it comes to these Discovery 2's.
D) Download the RAVE manual because you might be able to do some stuff yourself. I would like to see a more detailed list of what $17k worth of repairs gets you. Considering a new engine is $5k at the dealer and thats from the factory.
