Default Did i gernade the oil pump?

Towing boat uphill 40mph. Trans kicks down. Bout 3800rpm, BANG and low oil pressure light with engine starting to tick. Shut her down. Check oil level, good, just changed (with my quart of dura lube as all my vehicles). So am I looking at a pump? What exactly fails with it. How to confirm. Pull pan first or front cover? Thanks in advance, Randy. 140,000 miles.

Pull the pan first, because you need to pull the pan to remove the front cover.

Pan and check your con rods are all there and connected to pistons and crank. A loud bang at higher rpm and an immediate loss of oil pressure does not lend itself to an oil pump failure.........not in my experience.

Have you tried turning it over with the fuel pump fuse removed?

How did you get it home?

Engine ever had recall servicing or any engine servicing besides oil changes?

Pan first thanks. It turns over/runs. It dosent sound as bad as a conn rod, mabey a spun bearing. I had it and boat towed. 5th time in 10 yrs a flatbed dropped it off. Engine servicing besides oil changes ? Hmmm. I did the head gaskets twice. Coils, radiator, waterpump, o2 sensors twice, maf twice, belt twice, cooling hoses 3 times, coolant bottle, injector o rings, had the upper manifold off about 7 times total, spark leads twice, crank sensor twice, electric fan, mechanical fan, $3000 trans rebuilt, swapped over the horrible air ride after getting towed twice with failures, replaced the throttle body heater block about 4 times until I just blanked it.......What kind of question is that? We drive/push a land rover......

Pulled pan all good. No debris at all in pan. Few shavings up by timing chain so....Pump is gone.....

why not put a couple bolts back in the pan and put an oil pressure gauge on it, before ripping the front off

Thanks for the laugh, been a long day. Yeah, I'd say a spun bearing is likely, fairly common with these motors but usually on those that get no love'n. You've obviously not given up on yours, rather optimistic still...... If it runs it's not a busted chain either. So you think it's the pump eh. I think I'd like to see it too.

OK gents. Pump was broken in 3 pieces. The crank gear in 4 pieces and the crank key rounded....TOP TIP....The timing cover is held on with 10 bolts, NOT 9 as the rave states. 10th bolt is at 9oclock position...Was prying a bit too hard with 3ft prybar and had another look.....regular guys pass it along.....

Where did you end up getting your pump from, I'm in the same situation and trying to look at my options?

I just picked up a kit from BPUtah. But Try Lucky8, they may be able to provide a better price.
