Default Dif locks

Hi Im the old phart that bought a 2000 disco 2 about four months ago and am darned glad I did.
Like I said in my first post I am a little old for crawlin into under and that sort of thing but I do it.
Have the ole girl up to 15 to 19 mpg and running great.
Im not sure I understand about dif locks I hear you guys talk about. I have read where people ingage them by doing something to the drive line to get the four wheel drive more efficient. Does my 2000 have it or is that done when I put the xfer case in Low?Could someone take pity and a little patience for a proud disco owner? splain it to me?
Enjoy this forum.

being a disco 2 I'm not sure you have a CDL(center diff lock). So all you may have is high and low gears. the disco 1 have a CDL which locks the diffs.

Ok, the 2000 DII does NOT have a manual center LOCKING differential. You have the ability to, but would have to buy aftermarket kit from one of many Land Rover part retailers to obtain this ability. With the DII, they figured that so many CDL were not being used on the DI that MANY had seized up, and so they said, well if no one is using it lets just remove it. Also, the DII got electronic traction control which uses the anti-lock brake system to slow down spinning wheels. This also negated the need for a CDL, because technically you will never lose traction front and rear (which is all a CDL prevents). That said, Land Rovers are permanent four wheel drive and the CDL only applies to I think 2004 DIIs and all D1s. 1999, 2000, 2001 (early builds) can all have CDL attachments to make use of the CDL, 2002, 2003 cannot be made CDL whatsoever, and in 2004 they brought th CDL back, but in 2005 LR3 took over. If you do a lot of off roading, then it would be smart to buy an aftermarket CDL kit for a DII, because with a locking center differential and your electronic traction control you would be unstoppable (almost...lol...oh yeah, I am not sure, thought I read somewhere tho that if you engage the CDL it disengages the trac-control...not sure)

To clarify the last person's reply...

Chances are that your Disco II has the center locking transfer case. Land Rover, for the resons the previous person wrote, decided not to furnish the Disco II's with the linkage. All you have to do, it either buy the half dozen or so bits and pieces to connect the transfer case to your High/Low Range **** (and also cut a horizontal slot in the shift selector plate so your shif know will move right/left as well), or steal the shift linkage from a Range Rover.

The center locking diff together with traction control is supposed to be AWESOME.

From my research it looks like 1999-mid 2001 discos have the 10mm stud to enguage the CDL. My question is..what is the last month in 2001 that has it? I'm going to look at a '01 for sale next week and want to make sure it has the CDL.

Your 2000 will have the "nipple" the connect the CDL Linkage, all you need to do is get the parts to do it, install it, and you'll be set.

I have seen some 1/01 build dates that still had the t/case required.

Con,
To answer your question, no you will not get any better MPG running on one drive shaft, and with long term driving you will cause the other diff to fail because of Rover's very weak spider gears.

Mine is a April 2001 and I still had the nipple as well, easiest is to simply crawl underneath and have a "feel". I dont think the date of manufacture (unless its late 2001) will have much bearing on it, it will also depend on how long they took to get from here (uk) to there and then being registered.

An April build date surprises me caiuse that is the second to the last month for the build on 2001's.
