Differences between Discovery Models? S, SE, HSE etc.

RE: Differences between Discovery Models? S, SE, HSE etc.
I bought a 2002 Disco II last year, the SD model. A few of the differences between SD and SE that I'm aware of:
SD: No moon roof
SE: Dual power roofs
SD: Pleather seats
SE: Upgraded interioer -- leather, wood trim, etc.
SD: Standard Suspension
SE: Rear air suspension (in all or just an option--I'm not sure; this may be a liablility, since it seems like quite a few people convert from air to springs)
SD: no third row seat option
SE: SE7s have two cargo jump seats
I think there are a bunch of other small differences too, not sure how many are standard on the SE or options: headlight wipers, upgraded sound system with CD changer, tow package, etc....
I think the rear air suspension is probably the most sustantative difference tha would affect the performance of the vehicle--am I right in that? The SD has the same traction control, descent control, etc. as the SE, as far as I know.
It would be nice to see a dealer comparison between the models.
I -think- I'm happy I went with the SD. Lot's to consider upgrading, maintaining, replacing in these vehicles as it is, and there seems to be less that could go wrong with the SD. Hopefully, anyway...

$4.09 a gallon, my god you dont know how easy you guys have it in the US. A gallon of Diesel here in the UK now costs £4.99, or approx$10 dollars to you guys!!!. I would like a 4.6 Disco, but the fuel costs would be ridiculous....Td5 for me....

I wish we could get diesels here. I think that the US just doesn't like them, especially certain states. I just fueled up today, diesel was 60 cents more per gallon than premium gas ($4.09 and that was much cheaper than most places). Between that and the ultra low sulfur diesel that we have to use killingour mileage it almost doesn't seem worth it.

Dont get diesels [:-] !?!
Wow, thats like one of my primary reasons for getting the car haha, my dads diesel 2002 model gets 1200km/s to a tank, while my cousins V8 gets like 400km/s.

You need to decide what you are going to use this truck for before you worry about options. The CDL is really important, if you plan onm a lot of wheeling and only comes on the 99"s, 2000, the first few months of production and the 04's.
Have you ever owned a 4 wheeler before?

What does this CDL do exactly? Does that stand for Centre Diff Lock?
If so it wouldnt make much difference as I will be modifying this Discovery eventually anyway with say, OME suspension system, ARB Air locking differentials, etc, etc.
andrewmcoffin - So the Suspension is the biggest change in performance between the Series 2 models.
Thanks for all your replies guys.

Hi,
D1 = Disco series 1, 1989 -1998,
D2 = Disco series 2 1999-2004, Sd is a version / spec of a particular model, ie D1 or D2
I do find it strange why the TD5 was never offered in the US, but there again, the UK never got the 4.6 either
Also you can add the D2 CDL linkage to an "early" series 2 (99-2001)

I remember going to Finland about 3 years ago and gasoline was over $2.00 USD a liter, that's about $8 USD a gallon. Andthat was when the Euro was about $1= 1.60 Euros, now it's about $1= .65 Euros so it's certainly not getting any cheaper. We do (believe it or not) have the some of the cheapest gas prices in the world. Only places cheaper would be Middle East, Kuwait etc.

Correction - Series 1 went all the way to 1999. Both Series I and II were sold that year. We have a 1999 D1.

RE: Differences between Discovery Models? S, SE, HSE etc.
We purchased the S '03 S model. We're very happy with the seats, they hold up well, but I do wish we could have found an SE in our price range. I am adding fog lights (in bumper) like the SE and by the end of the day it will probably cost me $600 US, so if youlike the look and the features of the SE .. go for it. It's been a great vehicle.
