Default Disco 2 Parts on a D1

I need some help. I have a '95 Discovery & know what is compatible with it. I also have a '01 Disco 2 & have it all figured out. Long story short, I picked up a '96 Discovery yesterday that is in great off-road shape but is going to need some love. After research, I realized that the '96 uses a 4.0 but mine seems a little different. I got it from a custom hotrod builder, so you can probably imagine some of the things rigged on it. For starters, it has the 4.0 but OBD1 connector. I was under the impression they converted to OBD2 that year. Also, I thought they used GEMS system but I have Lucas plastered on everything like my '95. Could this have been rigged for some reason? Also, I have a parts D2 (2000) if any of the engine/suspension parts are compatible. I would need things like panhard rods, track bars, etc. If anyone has the time, could they explain the differences in the 96-98 Discos compared to the 4.0 D2's? Sorry for the newbie question, this is my first project Rover & the 96 seems to be in a grey area where lots of parts were different from the 3.9 D1's & 4.0 D2's.

Thanks in advance.

Read my sticky at the top of the D II page it explains alot of your questions. There are over 800 different parts between the two trucks.

Unless you get a 98 which we don't have many of in the states, or a early 99 they were put together with what was available and have a combination of D I & D II parts we call those frankin rover's. Better off putting D I parts on a D I and D II on a D II

OK. So 3.9 & 4.0 are the same w/ regard to suspension but not engines, & the 4.0 from the 96 Disco is different than the 4.0 Disco 2. I guess I'm the most concerned with the OBD1 port. Anything I find says they are OBD2 on the '96 4.0. I just have 2 different models in my garage for reference & this seems different than both.

Question, why are you wasting your time, nothing will switch over, engine, tranny, diffs, axles or electrical.

I guess I'm just trying to figure things out...I know my D2 parts won't work now so that's an ended post, but still have a few burning questions. I bought it from someone who tried to modify it so anything goes. I'm still confused on a few things, to make it easier could you answer this?

#1 - if I have OBD1 on a '96 4.0 is that correct or has the PO rigged something up? From what I've read on forums/wiki they changed to OBD2 in '96. Why's mine different? It runs & drives OK so I'm assuming everything is ok, I just would like to know for my own records.

#2 - if I'm looking to replace suspension components, do I need to be looking for any Discovery 1 or are the 96-98 Discos unique?

If it's been answered before, I apologize. I try to research before asking. I guess I should rephrase the original question and repost in the D1 forum - if you bought a '96 & wanted a parts rig to supplement it, what years do I need to look for (obviously up to '96 will have a different engine).

'96 was the year all passenger vehicles in the US were required to have OBD II (some brands, like Lexus, introduced it earlier). On yours', either the year on the title is wrong (check the VIN number, if the 8th digit from the right is a "S", it's a 95, if it's a "T", it's a 96) or it's from another market (maybe Canada? not sure about OBD there).

That's what I needed. I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but it's one of those situations where I'm finding one place says I should have "X" for my model year and mine is something totally different. This one has been stripped down for offroading, lot of parts cut out or removed like you would on an old Jeep. I want it to be at the level I've got my '95 and '01 at but it seems like they're not a good example for me to be looking at either.

Thanks for all the help everyone & have a Merry Christmas.
