Disco I vs II?
Hey, traitor in the works here...
Joining you guys to find out what to look for when purchasing a used Disco, what years are best, avg price, what issues to look for etc etc. The big question...Disco 1 or 2??? Yes, I know that Land Rovers are "more expensive to maintain" blah blah blah...wouldn't be asking if I cared or worried about having to repair a tool that is so well used :D I say traitor because I am in the process of selling my Jeep Wrangler...Need more space for another kid on the way and a large dog, currently already have 2 small dogs and a toddler lol. So here I am at another love of mine...the Discovery :) One thing is that I definitely plan on doing a bit of after market work. My needs are for back country trails for mountaineering, Tahoe trips, camping, K9 Search and Rescue etc etc So I need to make sure I pick the right year for longevity ;). Doesn't need to do crazy rock climbing but some clearance is def needed, hence why I had a Wrangler to begin with. Thanks -The Goat Yes, I know I posted this in new member thread but we all know no one ever looks there unless they have never used a forum before... |
As a fellow traitor (Jeep Cherokee), I wish you luck on whatever Disco you decide on.

This thread is a "sticky" at top and can be found in the "how-to" write ups. |
Check this out also:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=28599 Just a side by side look at the two, the responses are people's view of the two. Pros and cons, ect. |
Also, the terrain you mentioned... How would you rate its "toughness"?
The reason I ask, if it is fairly difficult, I would only look at DI's and 99-Mid 01 (and 2004) DII's because for those years, you have CDL or it can be easily added. In other words, avoid 2002's and 2003's at all costs and look at the Discos that have CDL or the ability to easily add CDL. As you prob already know, have diff lock is a must if you off road a lot. Now that I have it, I couldn't ever go back to traction control only!! |
I would find a 99 or 98 DI. DIIs suck in comparison. Stay far away from a 2003 DII. For a DII on paper the 2004 is the best year but the 4.6 can be a crap shoot if the previous owner was not religious with maintenance. Otherwise if you must have a DII find a nice 99 or 00 with 16" wheels. And if you can only find an 02 adding the CDL is about $350 plus labor if you cannot DIY. Which gets me to DIY, if you cannot DIY or don't want to learn stay far away from any british automobile.

Avoid the 2003's, many of them have/had faulty oil pump that resulted in total engine failures.

However, if you get an '03 that's out of the vin range, you'll be fine.

IMO the 4.6 is a crap shoot, at least you can fix a 4.0 when the head gaskets go
