Default Downpipe assembly broken at weld

Hi All,

The passenger side downpipe completely separated at the weld that joins the pipe to the flange that bolts to the manifold. See Pic:

My question is, will a shop be able to weld it back with the downpipe on the truck, or will I need to pull the entire y pipe and bring it to them?

Thanks!

probably depends on the shop. when my toyota broke at the manifold i took it in and the welded it in place. as long as they can access it without risking any other equipment they'll probably do it in place.

Yeah it will all depend on the shop and how easy it is to get to. Just drive it down there and see what a shop says. I know it will be loud but who cares. If you can take it off and have another vehicle to drive then that is nice too. you may get a better deal as well since they do not need to crawl and contort themselves to do the work.

I just repaired the same exact problem and I pulled the y-pipe and took it in to be welded. I can't say for sure, but I doubt you will be able to get a quality weld on the joint in such a confined space, especially if the crack extends behind the bolts. It would be impossible to get the welding tip close enough to the joint in this case.

It's not that bad of a job to remove the y-pipe, unless you break some of the studs holding the y-pipe to the header (which I did ). I ended up having to drill out the studs and helicoil new ones in. If you go this route, hopefully you have more luck.

Thanks for the first hand info. I'll go this route.

Pulled the pipe, stripping one bolt in the process. It's in a good spot to drill out though.

Question... When do oxygen sensors go out? Should I replace them now?

Also... I've blown a gasket on that side a year ago and now this. Im assuming this side is moving around alot causing stress on the area.. Is this common? Any fixes? Would I need to fab a hanger to keep it from removing around so much?

I do slot of highspeed washboard driving and need a fix or I'll be back in there soon.

Thanks
