Default Driver-side window - loud bang when going up or down

All windows and sunroof work fine on my 04 LR Disco SE II, except last week my driver-side window made a huge bang noise going down. I thought it was going to shatter right in front of me. Now it only goes down 1/3 of the way, and stops and makes a loud noise. Going back up it makes a "bang bang bang" noise until I let go of the button.

I took it in to an auto-mechanic (not a LR dealer - they charge too much) and he said the problem was the window regulator.

So now I ask the LRforum experts, what do I need to do? how much is it gonna cost me? (has this happened to you?)

A quick search on google showed me this for $90. If I need it, should I buy it online and bring it in to a mechanic / LR dealer? Should I let LR get the part themself (will they charge me more?).

Just trying to get a handle on how much this will cost. I bought this vehicle used, and havent had to have work done on it. Thanks for your advice/help

It's a common problem, remove the door panel and look inside, you may need to remove the window regulator and have a look. There are plastic gears and things that break, see what you can salvage and fix, or if it's fubar look for replacements.

It's probably the plastic roller that runs in the track. They tend to shatter then the gear moves too far and disengages.
You can fix for about $1.50 worth of stuff from the hardware store.

Flat head machine screw and self locking nut (# 8 or 10 I think I used)
Couple of fender washers same diameter as the track inside dimension
Couple of regular washers to use as spacers.

My driver's side broke like yours about 4 weeks ago. I tired to fix it twice, but would keep comming out of the track and the window would not go back up with out helping it by hand.

You have to put C clips around the washers you put on there in place of the broken plastic roller. But first you have to dremel off the large circle on the rivit post so you can get the washers over it. I got tired of F#$%ing with it so I bought a new one.
I got tired of the in the 95 degreee heat we had. I bought a new one and thought it would last another 7 years like my previous one. So far so good. I would only buy a new part on this. As these thing fail at the 2 to 7 year mark. Once you get it out. You will need a set of Torx to unscrew the 3 torx bolts and switch over the window motor. I lubed my new one up really well with Lucus #2 same as I use for the drive shaft. Nitrile gloves are good for this job, so you dont cut your hand plus get grease all over them.

This is a EuroSpare and is on par with AllMakes. It should be good. (Drivers Side)

I got mine from this guy on eBay(This is passengers side)

That's the hard way.
Easy way is to grind off the spot weld on the front of the arm that retains the post, then use a punch to knock out the post.
Then grind a bit off the flat head machine screw to make the head thinner, slip on a small washer that lets the head recess, add one or two fender washers (I can't remember if it was 1 or 2) then fasten it to the arm with the self locking screw. Then just slide it in to the track and crimp the track ends back over.

Hey Guys, I hate to dissapoint, but I'm just a "regular" land rover owner ... not a mechanic. I'm going to have to take this into the dealer I'm assuming to do what you guys have outlined.

How much should I expect to pay for parts and labor? Just trying to ask some knowledgeable people before I pay my hard earned money to LR...

The dealer won't fix the regulator, they will replace it.
It's $159 from Rovers North, so I wouldn't be surprised if they charge $200 -$400 for the regulator. Shouldn't take them more than an hour to replace it.
But you can always call and ask what they will charge.
You should be able to get it done cheaper at an independent mechanic.

Alternatively, find your local club and offer someone who's done it to theirs $60 to fix it and let you watch. Then you can do the others yourself when they break.

Default window regulator

It looks like I can find this online for less than $100. Would anyone recommend against buying it online and bringing it in to be installed? I dont want to waste anymore time than I have.

Thank you so much for the advice

Some shops will not use parts that you bring, and if they do they will not warranty anything since they did not get you the part. I would check with the shop first if they are willing to do it.

Even if you are not a mechanic or mechanically minded if you have ever assembled patio furniture then you can do this fix; just have some faith.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic who is good with LR's? The dealer here in Chicago I've heard horrible things about. I'm afraid to take a LR into just any 'car' mechanic. I just want the job done right at a fair price
