Thumbs up Engine Detailing Questions

I need to detail the engine in my 2004 Disco. Do I need to cover anything up to make sure that I don't short out any of the electrical systems? Also, can anyone recommend a degreaser to use? Any tips would be much appreciated.

The electrical components are sealed so that water is not an issue. I wouldn't recommend spraying the alternator or continuously for a long time but they will handle be cleaned with no problem. I have used the purple degreaser that Carquest sells, Purple Power I think it is called, and it does a good job.

Thanks AK Rover! I will cover the alternator just as a precaution. Dumb question for you - Is it O.K. to jack up my Disco on the differential housing with my floor jack? I would rather ask a dumb question than make a dumb mistake. I've made those mistakes before....

Only use degrease directly on a heavily oiled spot, not the entire engine compartment.
Use only the pressure wash, no soap and anything under the hood of a D2 is fair game, be it the alternator, coil packs or fuse blocks.
I do mine, as you can see by my picture, once a month and there is 100,000 plus on that engine without one start issue.
Make sure to tighten the 2 v/c bolts before you scrub the engine.

Thanks Mike. Where are the v/c bolts located? If I understand you correctly, I don't need to cover anything just use the degreaser sparingly on the tough spots. Your engine bay looks great!

v/c bolts are the valve cover bolts. Tighten them up to 10 ft lbs using a 8mm 12pt socket. They will work their way loose again so tighten them every 6 months at least.
