Fan clutch bolt removal

Default Fan clutch allen bolts removal

Went to remove the allen bolts on the fan clutch. Super tight. Are they regular threaded? After deforming my allen key I stopped trying after attempting one bolt.

Any tips for removal? Thanks.

I've not yet needed to replace the fan clutch but could you drill out the old bolts and just replace them?

I told ya those OEM Allen bolts were a PITA.. I just used a ratchet with a the correct allen head socket vs using an actual small allen wrench (much more torque with a ratchet). If that still won't work due to stripped allen heads sometimes torx bits actually will bite better, or just get out the vise grips. If none of that works then drill the heads off and call it a day. The USA made Fan Clutch uses different thread bolts so you don't need to save the OEM allen bolts anyways.

Some times will break loose by first applying wrench pressure in opposite direction. Quality, no HF allen key or socket. PB Blaster or other penetrating oil soak on both ends if not already.

Just saw new fan came with bolts. Will go to work on the old ones. Thanks.

Use an allen socket and a ratchet.
I just did this last week, mine were definitely had locktite on them.
The Hayden 2991 I used bolted straight on as well as used the same (original OEM) bolts too.

Can anyone tell me the torque for the fan to clutch allen bolts? I've viewed the service manual, but all I can find is torque settings for the viscous fan nut.

Mine finally broke free with a larger allen connected to a plastic handle/case. A good twist and they snapped free. Not sure of torque, but when I bolted on the new bolts, just blue loc-tited them and a good secure tightening using my judgment.

I used a very long crecent wrench.
Put that on the fan bolt.

Then a 5 pound stubby hammer.
Whack the top of the crescent wrench from left to right or counter clock wise.
Works like a charm.

Do not hit the alternator pulley by mistake.
Put rags in the belts to jam them.
