New to the forum and looking for some advice. This is my first Land Rover 04 with a 4.6. It’s non working condition and know nothing about it because it was bought at city auction. It had no oil when checked, decided to add oil but when I started to fill it up it started to leak oil between engine and transmission. I knew that more than likely I had a bad engine going into it. Could it be a bad rear main seal or just damaged engine?

Odd that it would show leakage before starting it up. I'd think it was running out of valve cover, down onto valley pan and then down back of engine (between bell-housings). You have nothing to loss, fill it up and run it, pull inspection plate in picture and see if it is super oily inside or it pours out while running.

I would run it but I can’t fill the oil pan, it just is pouring out as I am filling it. I was also thinking the covers. I going to tight the bolts on the cover.

@Lander454 you might be best to just drop the oil pan - it should not pour out that fast. Then you can see the rear main and crucifix seals.

Take a look at the rear of the right hand valve cover too just in case is leaking from there.

Ah your first Disco. You poor misguided soul….

Depending on your expectations of the machine and its intended use, you may be served to pull the engine and just go through the whole darn thing. If it is just a beater and something to tinker with, as stated, pull the pan and see what you can see. I’d pull the valve covers as well, and turn it over by hand a bit to make sure the world has not come to an end.

There has to be a hole somewhere to leak out that fast. Should be easy to spot if you can get it on ramps etc. Hopefully they didn’t seize the engine

Agreed, turn over by hand. If it is leaking out that fast then the valve cover must not be tightened down correctly. Once it starts I would consider checking the oil pressure. If you have not already, download the RAVE factory service manual. Read the stickies at the top of the forum. Rear main seal and crucifix seal will not leak oil as it is poured in, only a dislocated valve cover will do that. You might need to pout it in a little slower.

Well after further investigation the engine has a nice hole on the side of the pan to revival the mess inside. So now to look for an engine. It’s a 2004 with 4.6, what years of engine do I look for. My vin has a 9 on the7th digit.

well atlantic british and other rover shops have engines for these long blocks and short blocks probably 5 k not sure, but you would have a shop install that for you or try a junk yard maybe but you wont know what your going to get, i would look over your disco and see about obvious other problems like rusty frame etc, no point in spending the money and something thats junk already,

You may be able to get a decent used engine. Try Will Tillery Land Rover New and Used Parts and Accessories ? RoverGuy Land Rover Parts and Accessories or other good sources.
