RE: First DIY Oil change
remove oil plug and drain oil.
let that drain and drop for awhile. have a beer.
replace plug.
remove and drain oil filter. let it drip and drain for awhile. finish 1st beer or start second.
fill new filter 1/2 to 3/4 full with new oil and coat rubber ring on the filter with a sheen of old oil. tighten filter by hand until tight and then with filter wrench tighten maybe another half turn until snug.
put new oil in the oil fill spout,,,
check level with stick. start and run. let it sit for 5 min and check oil level again.
done,,, you deserve a beer

Along with that, in the future, you don't need to replace the oil drain plug ring, just turn it over and use it again, my oil ring is nearly 10 years old now.
As for the filter, save some money and buy a better oil filter, either the Mobil1-301 or the K&N 3001, both are larger and have better filter media in them.
How often are you planning on changing your oil??

RE: First DIY Oil change
from here on in myself i will change at every 3000 with 10w-40 synthetic, and wont worry any more about this washer, they gave me some at the dealer so i will use em. oh and i went with the OEM filter only because thats what it had from the last oil change and wanted to keep with a pattern here, but i would definitely benefit from a k&N in that they cost four bucks as opposed to 20!

I always put the truck on2 blocks of wood as well to "slightly" raise the front end, this helps more of the old oil drain out from the bottom of the sump

Someone earlier in the post said to replace the drain plug before removing the filter. If you leave the plug out when removing the filter, more oil will drain from the plug. Getting more out is a good thing, so do not replace the plug until after you remove the filter.
