Fox vs Bilstein shocks
To clarify, I was looking at the Bilstein 4600 shock to use with a 2" lift MD springs. My sense is that the 4600 shock is too short to use with a taller spring and wouldn't perform very well out of range. The Fox 2.0 would be the correct length as would the OME Sport shock. I've had great results with the Bilstein in other applications but don't see a +2" shock in their on-line application guide.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I used these Bilsteins "F4-BE5-6046-H0" and the 6047 rears before buying MD +2 springs.
Very happy with the ride... until I put the new springs on with the same Bilsteins that had under 10k miles on them.
I'm not sure what the issue was but all I felt was the spring and no damping. Either they were not meant to be used with +2 springs or I completely beat the crap out of them with them (doing an admirable job) compensating for the old sagging worn out stock coils.
Either way as much as I loved those shocks on stock springs, they no longer did the job with the +2 MD springs.
The moral of the story for those reading up on springs and shocks is to do both springs and shocks at the same time. I was trying to spread out the cost of the suspension upgrade but that turns out to not have been a great idea.
I would be curious if anyone actually knows whether the issue was those Bilsteins not being made specifically for +2 coils and at 10k miles those old shocks might still be good with stock springs. ???

I've never seen in all my searching whether OEM length shocks work with +2 springs or not.
Is that actually the case?
Or is it just a matter of how you use the vehicle whether you need +2 shocks with +2 springs?

You can absolutely install regular height shocks with +2 springs.
- I would not recommend it
- You can definitely damage the shock by using it as a limiting strap
- you won't get the full use of the spring
- don't

The shocks are extended and the center or neutral position of the shock is now lower, so if when your vehicle goes up(so to speak), the shock will bottom out on the extension and destroy the shock.
