It is a 9/16 socket but it's got a slim profile that makes the job 20x easier. I have done it without but it is not fun. The rear shaft uses the same size so if you plan to upgrade that ever, you'll be glad you have it.

If you're near Central Oregon I have two and I'm happy to give one up.

I paid a general mechanic to do it. Watched how hard a time they had, did not regret it. Just awkward, even on a lift. So glad I gave up when I was on my back under it (before I got it halfway off and regretted it).

I got mine installed in Pickering. $140 (Canadian) Are you getting it done.

I purchased both front and rear Tom Woods shafts from Lucky8 and had mechanic do as well. Too hot here in FL. They ended up putting the rear shaft on backwards so I had to flip around myself but they did the hard stuff..flange
