Default Front driveshaft issues

Hi,

I brought my disco into a local indie mechanic and was told I need to replace the front drive shaft immediately, and for $450. That was in the middle of last summer. I haven't had a single issue since and haven't had any noises whatsoever. Today I swapped it out for a newer used one with greaseable u-joints and I didn't see anything on the old one that stuck out. I'm also not exactly sure what to look for.

If the old one doesn't have greasable U-joints or you don't know the history from the PO, then that's enough reason to do it. Because eventually, you'd have been replacing a tranny along with your propshaft, if not more.

Glad you're good now. Just make sure you grease it at every oil change.

Depends on where you are. If there's corrosion present I would just replace the hardware.

I'm in Denver. Aside from a little dirt they look great for being 11 years old.

Mike,
My drive shaft failed at 37,000 miles, I was lucky and was aware of it so I didn't also loose my tranny.
You are local so if you want, send me your number and lets talk.
You can, if you are mechanical enough, rebuild both shafts for around $120, or go online and get a real strong one for around $350.

I bought a gently used one from a member local on here. It's nice and greased up and installed. Took about 45 min. Not too bad. I'm not too sure what I'm gonna do with the old one. Rebuild it and have it or rebuild it and sell it.

Thanks for the input guys!

Looks can be deceiving. If your not familiar with them don't try to rebuild it yourself.

I just took it for a spin and got it up to about 60. Couple things I noticed. My wife noticed a squeak, which I also heard, and was complaining about some vibrations once over 40. Both of these are gone. Were those the warning signs prior to failure?

In this day and age, you get what you pay for.
I would get rid of that and do as mentioned before you need a tranny also.
