Default Fuel Gauge Problem

My fuel gauge is acting strange. Sometimes empty and sometimes full. Does not show accurate levels. I have to turn engine off and on to reset it. What do you think is the cause. Thanks

So this is going to sound really strange, but open up the tank and play with the level sensor ( float at the bottom of the pump.) You are going to need a second person to watch the gauge.
