Gas Mileage

I'm a newbie to this site. I just bought a, 04 Disco. It is very pimp. I'm going to use it priimarily for daily driving and wanted to see if there were any mods out there that would help increase the gas mileage.

I know intake and exhaust would help, I'm not sure on brands and such for the Disco. I'm used to sports cars.

Any thoughts?

RE: Gas Mileage

As it is an 04 model, then any modifications will affect the warranty on it..

What fuel type is it? Diesel or petrol(gas)

Is it a Disco Series 2 or a LR3 ?

It might be possible to get a remapped engine management system to give better performance and fuel economy. Other mods will be dependant on the fuel type.

Dane! 03-15-2014 01:33 PM

Buy a Prius. You wont get anymore than 17mpg with amazing driving habits. Anyways, bad gas mileage gets you the best places on earth!

zeroone 03-15-2014 01:37 PM

Way to revive a 10 year old thread... lmao. I would have lost him at "pimp"

Dane! 03-15-2014 02:12 PM

I didn't see the date... Weird. On my phone it was showing there was a recent post. Oh well, looks like I'm "that guy" :)

zeroone 03-15-2014 02:44 PM

The mobile site has been a bit goofy lately. Apparently some people are saying the mobile site displays on their desktops..

OffroadFrance 03-15-2014 02:52 PM

Eeeerrrr, he probably ran out of gas! ;);):D

jfall 03-15-2014 03:31 PM

2001 D2.

16 MPG in Southern CA - that is never exceeding 55 MPH.

17.4 MPG on Cross Country trip - never exceeding 60 MPH.

LOL

Here in Florida you drive 55 on the Interstate you're either shot, run over or both. That's why my D2 gets about 12 MPG on the Freeway.

At least in my world.

:D

SDinDS 03-15-2014 04:34 PM

What am I doing wrong then? 14 mpg in town 19-20 mpg on the interstate running 65-70mph Maybe my odometer is off! :D ;)

OffroadFrance 03-15-2014 06:39 PM

I'd hate to tell you guys what I get from my TD5 as I hate seeing people weep. Putting it conservatively, it's nearly twice as much average as you guys get from the V8. The RRS 3.0 diesel gets even more to the imperial gallon.

zeroone 03-15-2014 06:50 PM

This is according to the UG.. so i am unsure of accuracy. I average 11.6mpg. On the instant side.. around 55mph.. on a flat.. wind coming up the back.. 16mpg highway. Maybe. Around town.. 9-11. I travel rt 80 east and westbound for about 10 miles each way to work. The around town mileage makes up the other 7 miles each way. (Total trip to work is 17 miles one way). I drive it every day.. I don't let it get below 1/4 tank. The most it cost me was $85 to fill. I haven't seen over $75 since then. Keep in mind my rover has crummy tires.. A vibration the refuses to show itself, probably original wires.. and I still have to do the induction cleaning. (Waiting to figure out where the coolant leak is before doing the last 2)

jalodge 03-15-2014 07:45 PM

Is there something wrong with mine? I am averaging 10 mpg and 11 if I am lucky.

EVN137 03-15-2014 08:08 PM

2000 LR DII, 149,500 miles, no CEL, just tuned up and a vacuum leak fixed ( during this tankful ) now averaging 13 MPG and improving from 12 MPG. Mix city and highway driving.

In my experience... it has everything to do with your driving habits. The g/f drives my previous car for a week (97 grand prix gt),
She bitches when she empties the tank in about 250 miles. I ask her how she drove it because I could almost hit 400. She says the usual.. This means at least 1/2 throttle from every stop.. waiting until she is 5 feet from the car in front of her to slam on the brakes.. Every little thing you do can and will affect fuel economy.

jfall 03-16-2014 02:07 AM

Drive as if there is an egg on the gas pedal. You press too fast and the egg breaks.
That is the ONLY way to get MPG from a D2.

Don't go past 55MPH on the highway.

If people get behind you and tail gate, put on the rear fog lights for a time to ward them off.

Getting an extra 2 to 3 MPG saves you a good bit of money when you are commuting.

Never ever try to beat anyone off of a stop light.
Remember, "winning" is saving money at the pump, not passing
some random person.

zeroone 03-16-2014 03:02 AM

rear fog lights are awesome jfall.. that was the first thing i though of when i found out what those red lights where.. lol

OffroadFrance 03-16-2014 05:09 AM

You are dead right Jfall, like learning motorsport, it's all about smoothness, no hard acceleration, no hard braking so no tailgating, constant steady speed where the truck just purrs.

No throttle pedal stabbers welcome in this truck :(

+1, great, frightens the crap out of tailgater's and also blinds them in the rain or snow if they are too close. :D Trouble is in France tailgating is normal and they aren't concentrating so they wouldn't notice the rear fog's come on.:mad:

SDinDS 03-16-2014 09:19 AM

Another way to improve fuel economy is don't run the transmission in sport mode.

And it is nice having TWO rear fog lights. Volvo only puts one on theirs so I did an easy mod to get both of mine working. :)

Remove all creature comforts....rear seats, headliner, A/C, chop off the top, remove bumpers.....just strip the bad boy of all safety, cool, pimped out stuff.....then maybe.....only maybe.....might you peak at 18MPG!

Kidding of course mi amigo....just work O/T hours as best you can to pay for the gas and easy on the pedal. O/T hours will also help pay for some expenses that you might incur while owning your disco. Welcome to the "discoteque!" club!

You mean like this.....................Range Rover dune buggy used in TV series by Anneka Rice. I liked the Corvair used by Steve McQueen in the Thomas Crown affair....................wife wouldn't let me have one :(

Sorry, forgot to post the link :o

tres bien mona mi?

MarkSF 03-16-2014 06:12 PM

If I want fuel economy I drive my Passat TDi.... 50mpg highway driven briskly - 75mph cruising. I use that for commuting and keep the Discovery for weekends.

zeroone 03-16-2014 06:18 PM

My 95 satan.. I mean saturn get 24mpg.. and that's being nice to it.

I've been looking at the Skoda Octavia estate diesel 2.0 litre, 140bhp. Nice economical car for running about. It's the same as the Passat but cheaper.

MarkSF 03-16-2014 06:53 PM

Mine is the US Passat but I drove a UK-spec TDI wagon in the UK at Christmas, which I imagine is virtually the same car as the Skoda. Very nice... the Land Rover and the TDI average out into a car with normal fuel economy!

gbob 03-16-2014 07:25 PM

Love the diesel VW Bug! Kudos to the Germans. However, my next ride will be a 1979 Ford Galaxy, vapor fueled and getting about 125 miles to the gallon.

Tom Ogle ~ Vapor Fuel System

As Rod Sterling once said "....you have now just entered the twilight zone.....(and you gotta do that stupid "two-dah-dooh-dah" three times, fast.

What say you now VW TDI?

MarkSF 03-16-2014 10:25 PM

We'll I'm going to install a vapor fuel system in my TDI, and I'll be getting 600mpg

Dane! 03-16-2014 11:37 PM

Damn... I accidentally revived the hell out of this thread :D

Anyways, to jump on the bandwagon, i get 17 average per tank... I drive to college and work. Got 18.6 once from Las Vegas to St. George all freeway varying from 65-90 mph. Although 17 mpg is still god awful in todays standards.

zeroone 03-17-2014 12:12 AM

And here folks.. is how you beat the death out of a 10 year old thread... lmao.

gbob 03-17-2014 04:44 AM

and the preacher said to the congregation "..... all who agree with this 10 year old thread, can I get an AMEN?"

Love the VW TDI Vapor Fuel System.....good one. However, I was hoping to revive my wide leather pant belt with the peace sign, striped flair pants, gold chains around my neck and polyester shirt. Oh yea, tinted glasses and side burns when I got my Ford Galaxy. Bummer. I was even going to break out my fuzzy dice and hang them on my rear view mirror.

peace out, groovy and bitchn' dude!

OffroadFrance 03-17-2014 05:02 AM

Yeah, I'm gonna install one of those $10 hydrogen gas from water gadgets and get my fuel for nothing 'cos everyone's got one they say. And it does a million miles on a gallon of tap water and runs perfectly clean so your oil lasts forever.....................and when I wake up it's still needing tanking up at the pumps like everyone else's. I think Ogle was also another myth that's become embedded.........................like flying saucers from Mars..............:eek:;)

slabrat 03-17-2014 08:45 AM

I drive my 99 80 miles a day. 1 day work pays for the other 4 days transportation.
Don't care I ain't driving no smaaat caa I'd rather walk.
That was my pitiful attempt at a Boston accent. When I drove up in New England. every time I got on a different highway I had to pay out the A_ _ in tolls. And every time there was a miniature vehicle in front of me, scrambling to find some money. That's why I like it here in the mid south we are too poor to pay tolls every time we go somewhere. So I have more money to fuel the beast. 17 MPG on the 99 mostly highway. No state tax on retirement . No tax on my assets after I'm dead. Northern states are always in somebody's pocket it seems.
Now that is how one properly hijacks a thread.

gbob 03-17-2014 12:41 PM

What? No such thing as flying saucers? So the whole Roswell N.M. thing was just a farce? Next I suppose your gonna tell me we didn't land on the moon, right? Holy frijole batman, no Santa Claus either?

Great Hijack! Got nothing more to say! But, we'll see....to be cont'd

gbob 03-17-2014 12:45 PM

This is actually false. There have been many on here that have tested it and improved their MPG's. I even started a thread asking about this a while ago. My wife brought up the question in her '04, as she was getting better mileage. Here's my thread...
