Default Getting code P0171, but not 0174

So the Service Engine light came on this morning as I was going into work. Thankfully I was close to an OReilly so I pulled in and got it scanned. I got P0308 and P0171.

I did some searching on the forums and I don't see where people get a P0171 without a P0174. So I thought I would ask you guys.

My understanding with the P0308 is to check that plug for spark and check the wiring. My guess is both the plugs and wiring need to be replaced so I am planning on doing that soon. It's the P0171 that I'm not so sure about.

Any advice would be appreciated, though.

i had the 0174 with out the 0171. I changed the MAF meter and front 02 sensors it has not come back. Hopefully that mis fire is a plug or wire.

Try swapping the upstream O2 sensors side to side and see if the P0171 becomes a P0174. I don't know how old your plugs and wires are but I wouldn't change them yet. A bad O2 sensor can trigger a misfire.

I was able to take out the driver side O2 sensor. The passenger side was a different story. I used penetrating oil on it and that bugger didn't move. I'm taking it to a shop in the morning and slipping the guy a few bucks to loosen it up for me.

I did manage to get a picture of the driver side O2 sensor (attached) just to show you guys. I don't know if you can tell anything from the pic, but I thought I would try.

I'm getting somewhat of the same codes on mine man. I got the p0150 and the p0174. My ultra guage is showing hardly any voltage to the passenger front and the drivers rear isn't matching too well with the passenger rear o2 sensor. I've taken en out and cleaned up but I think I just gotta break down and spend the money.

I replaced both my front O2s recently. Just like you, driver's side came out relatively easily but the passenger side had been cross-threaded and wouldn't move. I ended up having to drop the entire y-pipe to get enough room to work (and since all of the frame bolts and the bolts at the muffler were rusted in place that meant grinding them all off), then re-tapping the hole after I got the old one out.
Just so you know what you might be in for.

Yeah. Dropping the entire pipe is where I'm going to draw the line. There's a local independent LR repair shop in town and the guy there referred me to a muffler shop that does this sort of thing a lot. I called them and he said that he could loosen the sensor and then swap them for me at the same time for $50.

Well worth the price to get it done without me tearing up my hands again.

Will let you know if the codes change once the O2 sensors are swapped.

On a side note, I called the local LR dealership to see if they had O2 sensors and get a price. They wanted $285... for each... I think I'll just buy them from AB for 1/4 the price.

Dear God, $285 for an O2? What are they smokin'? Never mind.

I am a veteran of the School of Hard Knocks with respect to O2 sensors on the DII. I expect others have more experience than I but I have been around the block a time or two.

I don't think we can tell you anything based on the picture. O2 sensors take a lot of abuse in their working environment. They can be bench tested with a propane torch and a multimeter. You can find how to do that on YouTube.

One thing my SOHK education has taught me about O2s is that some are bad out of the box so buy locally to make returns easier.

Are O2 sensors from Auto Zone up to the same standard as the ones from Atlantic British? I don't mind getting them from wherever as long as what I'm getting is a quality part. I just naturally expected AB to have the "right" parts, but if I can get the sensors from AutoZone or O'Rielly then I'm ok with that.

The upstream sensors you should find at AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, Advance, Pep Boys, etc. will more than likely all be the Bosch 15175 in a Bosch box.
