Is this a good deal?
Hey guys, new member.
I own a 2006 LR3 and I love it to death (although secretly I want a RR)[:@]
my friend is looking into buying a disco II. I have NO idea what disco's are like in terms of maintenance, reliability, etc. I think you guys know the drill here.
I need a few questions answered, then i need the car analyzed by someone, heres the link:
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehi...AdIdZ101944734
1998 Land Rover Discovery LE5 (whats LE5 mean?)
179,000 KM
Price: 6K
e-Tested
A) Are disco's expensive to repair?
B) Does this year / model have any huge problems? (all car models have their quirks, i know that)
C) Would you recommend it?
D) Me and him are pretty young guys, and I'm sure it is the most frowned upon gesture here, but whats the deal with lowering a land rover? I've always thought my LR3 could use some spice, just wondering about a disco. Would it hinder anything a land rover can do (we aren't going off roading in these. typical suburban drivers).
Anyways, we've been searching for a car for this guy for a while. We went from a Lincoln LS, to a S500, to a 328xi, to a A8, and now to this (bare in mind they were all 2000 model years, not new).
A as a Land Rover owner im pushing for him to get this car cause... let's face it. we own the best damn cars on the face of this planet!!!!
P.S we are in Canada, so all models, pricing, and distance quantification is in... Canadian

RE: Is this a good deal?
Well at 110,000 miles that is WAY over priced. Not sure what the conversion (US $ to CA $)is right now, but I paid $4500 for my 1997 LE with 152,000 miles on it 2 years ago. (it blue booked at $5,800 they were asking $6,200)
I have the exact same truck and the only problems I have had in the last two years is wheel bearings, alternator and water pump.
It now has 177,000 miles.
It is a 5 passenger model, LE7 would be 7 passenger.
Common problems with DI's are the cruise control not working, sunroofs not working, ABS not working and the check engine light being on.
Cruise, easy fix.
Sunroofs, expensive fix most of the time so just leave them closed if they dont work.
ABS can be cheap or very expensive.
Check engine light 90% of the time a good tune up cures that.
You MUST use premium gas.
That is a very sharp looking truck.

"That is a very sharp looking truck" hahah you guys call it a TRUCK!!!!!???????
Besides that, thanks for the awesome reply!
And to answer your question. 6k Canadian to USD = 4,8600.. so this car in the states isnt even 5 grand.
And 179,000km = 111,000 miles.
So this seems an ok deal maybe, compared to yours? we're talking maybe 400 more for 65,000 miles or so less. which isnt bad im thinking.
Back to the run down. My biggest concern here for my friend is the ABS not working lol. does it just fail or what? I dont want anyone driving around and then BAM abs dead.
check engine lite, cruise control, alternator, water pump = easy fixes, not too concerned with those. wheel barrings are a bit different. This car looks like its from a good owner, so maybe it has been taken care of. My friend is signing up to one of the sites up here that give us a full history of the car (pay $30 or something for that info). Hopefully nothing too crazy shows up. Is it possible to lie on those things? I.E have it not reported maybe?
Premium gas is a must, I agree. And yes, this is a very sharp looking SUV!

RE: Is this a good deal?
If/when the ABS goes bad he wont lose the brakes, just the ABS.
If it is a bad wheel sensor you are looking at $400, if it is the ABS modulator it is closer to $2,000.
I pulled my ABS fuse from under the hood.
I had my wheel bearings done at my local muffler/brake shop, $200 for both sides.
My truck was a one owner who always had it serviced at the dealer.

RE: Is this a good deal?
youre right about abs, he doesnt lose breaks.
wheel sensor... not sure he'll even need to repair it cause cruise control is practically useless, can definitely live without it
What did pulling the abs fuse do? just eliminate the capability and get rid of the warning sign?
and wheel barrings are no prob i guess..
looks like this is a pretty low maintenance car. it was designed by the best so thats no surprise
thanks again for the reply

RE: Is this a good deal?
The wheel speed sensor has nothing to do with the cruise control, it is what senses the speed of each wheel and sends that info to the ABS ECU.
If you are braking and one wheel is not turning then the ABS pumps THAT brake through the ABS modulator.
If a wheel speed sensor is bad then the ABS ECU cannot get a reading from that wheel and the ABS at that wheel will not work.
I have a bad wheel speed sensor, I wont pay the $450 for a new one so I pulled the ABS fuse so as far as the ABS ECU knows the truck is parked in the garage and never gets driven.

RE: Is this a good deal?
I had to go to the dealer to pick up some small parts today and fell in love with a white 2008 LR3. It was a service loaner vehicle and I don't know what it was about that particular truck but it was just bad ***. I think they had the suspension in an elevated state which made it look ready to conquer anything. If I wasn't so upside down in my Dodge I'd be driving a white LR3 now. If I do ever get an LR3 my first mod is going to be Discovery 3 badging in place of LR3.
The 98 you are looking at is an ok deal at best. I paid $3700 USD for my 97 LSE this past summer with 109,000 mile on it. I would definitely try to talk the seller down on the price. Spike is right about the common problems but he forgot to mention that all Discoveries like to eat factory head gaskets. Once head gaskets are replaced you're good to go for the rest of the vehicle's life but they have a tendency to die young. My head gaskets started to leak so were replaced at 111,000. I have been fighting with my cruise control working intermittently since I bought the truck and have learned to just deal with it. Use it when it decide to work and use my foot on the gas when it doesn't. ABS is by far the most expensive to repair of the common D1 problems. Unless you find a great deal on parts you're looking at $400 minimum to fix the ABS. I pulled the fuse for my ABS and just live without it, but I would use an ABS light on as part of the price negotiations. I bought a set of brand new sunroof rails off ebay and installed them myself so it cost me $100 to fix my front sunroof. Normally, like Spike said, fixing the sunroof can be very expensive.
The Discoveries are a lot more reliable than people give them credit for being but they are maintenance intensive. Being a Land Rover owner, I'm sure you understand that. Cost to keep them running is dependent on mechanical ability and what kind of deal you can find on parts.
