Default Grease for front ball sockets D1

What kind of grease should I get for the front ball sockets on my D1? I see some people are just pumping grease in them instead of using oil. Is this recommended and if so how many pumps should I put in each socket?

Are you talking about the swivel ball housing?


Land Rover originally used gear lube in them, but sometimes the large swivel seals leak (item 6) and people complained, so they switched to what they call "one shot" grease. A measured amount comes in a tube, and you use one per side.

I mixed 1/3 #2 grease and 2/3 85/140 gear oil. Heated, mixed and poured in. I now have a can of the mixture.

or just buy what they have in the tube.

Note: if you just pump grease into it, it will sit at the top of the housing and not allow you to add anything else once it dries out.

FYI.........the grease is also available at most small engine repair shops as " 00 grease" it's used in the transmissions of a lot of equipment, and you can get quart for less than the price of the stuff in the pre-measured tubes

The swivel ball is what I was referring to. I guess no plain grease, but will mix with gear oil. I prob. need to drain the old out first though (if any left in there)

Do not mix it, use the 1 Shot packets if you want the best wear protection and little or no leaks.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR FRONT BEARING, SEALS AND PRELOAD ON THE SWIVELS, ARE YOU DEALING WITH THAT AT THE SAME TIME?

This is not true.
It will work its way down into the housing and lube everything just fine.
Is it preferred? No. Will it work in a pinch? Yes.

I agree with the "00" grease, lawn mower shops sell it, Snapper uses it in their differentials.
It is pretty cheap and has a nozzle for getting into the small hole on the mower diff.
