These brown bears are 8 feet tall when standing up and weight 1500 pounds.
They can also run at 35 mph.
Since this is where I do my wheeling, how fast can a 98 DI do in reverse?
I think 98 will surely fast. The bear will not get you with the average speed of 69mph. It is surely higher than the speed of the bear. Originally Posted by eaglewing

You are referencing the Smith and Wesson 500. It is a .50 cal pistol (actually a .490 cal pistol but you get the idea) LOTS of fishing guides, wildlife researchers, fish and game cops and the like in Canada and Alaska carry them specifially for grizzly bears.
As for bear proofing you disco I figure that since it is made from aluminium the body on our rovers is very similiar to the beer cans they torn open on the side of the trail in our friends earlier post.
Carry a S & W 500 and wear running shoes. The first 5 rounds of the 500 go into the bear, the 6th round goes into who ever is standing next to you. Turn and run- between the running shoes and the .50 cal hole in them you should have no trouble out running your companion.
good luck

Bill, who never hunted but always wanted to, decided to gear up and go bear hunting. On his first day, he spots a little black bear, gets it in his sites, and "boom" shoots it dead. He feels a tap on his shoulder, turns around, and there stands a brown bear.
Brown bear says "Bill, you shouldn't have done that; that was my buddy. So in avenging his death I'll give a you choice; I rip you limb from limb or you let me have my 'way' with you".
Bill thinks for minute, decides today was not a good day to die and agrees to let the bear have his 'way' with him. Well, it took Bill about a month to recover from this experience and when he was able he decided to go back out to the woods, find the brown bear, and kill him. Sure enough, after an hour he saw the brown bear, got him in his sites, and "boom" shot him dead. Then he felt a tap on his shoulder, so he turns around and there stands a grizzly bear.
The grizzly bear says "Bill, you shouldn't have done that; that was my buddy. So in avenging his death I'll give a you choice; I rip you limb from limb or you let me have my 'way' with you".
Bill thinks for minute, decides again that today was not a good day to die and agrees to let the bear have his 'way' with him. Well, it took Bill about two months to recover this time and could hardly wait to get back out to the woods to kill this grizzly bear. Sure enough, after an hour he saw the grizzly bear, got him in his sites, and "boom" shot him dead. Then he felt a tap on his shoulder, so he turns around and there stands a polar bear.
The polar bear looks at Bill, tilts his head in amazement and says "Bill, you don't come out here for the hunting, do you?"

In bear country (aka all of Alaska) I carry my 10mm Glock pistol with the hottest rounds I can get and still control the recoil. That's for situations like fishing where carrying something bigger would be difficult or bear encounters are improbable. I know the 10mm won't kill a full size grizzly but hopefully it will buy me a few seconds to slip away. In areas where bears encounters are probable, like a couple of my favorite fishing holes, I carry my Winchester 1300 Defender loaded with nothing but 3" slugs with an extra 6 slug rounds ready to load in a carry attached to the receiver. Buckshot and birdshot do nothing but wound a bear and make it even more dangerous. Some stick to the theory of the first shot being buckshot to take out the bear's eyes, ears and nose but I personally believe that the situation requires shooting I shoot to kill from the first round.
Being aware of the surroundings and knowing how to react in the event of a bear encounter are the most important thing to survival. Alaska has a rather unique education system. When I was young we were taught how to build a snow shelter, what to do in case of an earthquake and what to do if you come across a bear. Bear bells don't work, they just give the bear indigestion and bear spray make for pepper scented bear scat. The worst thing you can do is run from a bear. Anything running is food. Back away from the bear very slowly while making noise so it knows your human and not food. Climbing a tree is a waste of time with a bear. A black bear will climb the tree after you and a grizzly will just push the tree over.

At Tahoe place it was a black bear, +/- 400 lbs, 6' tall when standing and maybe 20mph downhill with good tail wind. As to speed in reverse, "It totally depends on driver."

Just always remember to follow the one sure fire tip when dealing with bears. Bring along someone with you that you can outrun, cause you don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other person.
