Grisly bear in my back yard help
I just checked out the gun theory.
The locals drive 4x4 pickup trucks made of steel with gun racks.
I have never seen a Discovery with gun racks.
Atlantic British and British Parts Utah dont carry gun racks.
Here is one for a Range Rover Classic

Basically you use a dog barrier with add on rife supports.

As far as the gun rack thing goes you could consider removing the nets above the rear seat and mount some gun clips up there. You would probably have to custom fab something though. I am in favor of the stick idea. HUGE manpoints. Plus you could make custom seat covers out of the hide after you kill it. Very cool man.

We normally have black bears and wolfs on this island.
This grisly bear sighting is unusual, but becoming more common.
With the very low salmon return to the rivers, these bears are out looking for new territory, salmon streams and a mate.
Most likely this is a young male that was pushed out by the bigger bears on the mainland.
He will likely stay here awhile, eat some berries, look for crab on the sea shore, and then get the urge to find a female. At that time, he will swim back to the mainland.
The danger is that this is a big wild animal and hungry

I dont think bears are really to fond of us humans so if they know you are around they will most likely leave you alone, as everyone knows bear's scense of smell is much stronger than their eyesight, so I would suggest; starting at your front bumper, urinate all the way around your truck in a counterclockwise direction, paying particular attention to get enough on the tires since there will be some loss from the flinging of the rotating wheel.

I like the treakrover theory to bear proofing a Discovery
Use the sense of smell to repel the bear by urination in a clockwise direction around the truck.
I presume you would do this in northern latitudes and counter clockwise urination for southern latitudes.
My next step is to find a volunteer to test this theory that clockwise urination on a LR is best for northern latitudes

Salve said it all ; do not surprise the bear. As long as the bear is aware of your presence it will not approach you. The only thing you can do to avoid bears is to make noise, and maybe carry a gun just in case.
I go on a fishing trip once a year in a place where there are a lot of bears. Every morning we usually hide some beers on the lakeside so we have fresh beers on our way back to the camp. Last year we found our cans totally ripped apart. A bear drank all 4 beers we hid. Well we assume it was a bear. Is fangs left big holes in the cans. I kept one as a souvenir.
And remember do not keep food in your pocket; some guy got killed by a bear a couple of years back because he fell asleep with a bag of potato chips in his back pocket.
