Hello folks. So I just embarked on the land rover journey about a month ago. It's a 2003 disco2
with 146000 miles and I'm having trouble getting this thing on the road Due to a random misfire. Here is a list of codes that I am getting. Spark plugs are good, spark plug wires are good, replaced coil pack, Replaced the coolant temperature sensor, Done head gasket work, Bought the truck with the secondary air injection system deleted. Engine Runs great and seems to idle OK. Just wanting to get help on diagnosing without throwing more money at this then I have to.. I love the truck and I am looking forward to enjoying it. Decided to just get help before replacing sensors and other things because I know sometimes 1 problem came cause other codes to pop up. Also there is a black moist soot coming out of tailpipe but no smoke. It does kind of have a gas like smell. Semi burned like smell.

I would seriously question whether the SAI was removed properly.

 

That's what I've been wanting to look into. All 4 holes on the sides of the headd have been plugged and both valves are nowhere to be found. Do you possibly know where all of the SAI lines are supposed routed to? Or shall I say which components did the SAI pump air to?

 

I'm not an expert on SAI, but it only pumps air into the heads.

At the moment, you're getting fault codes for your SAI, EVAP, O2 sensors, MAF, camshaft position sensor, and coil packs.

If you don't know what's been done, it's always a good idea to start with a new MAF and O2 sensors, as they're not terribly expensive. I'd also check the work on the coil packs; make sure the connectors are both clean and firmly seated. Check the connectors to the ECU as well, and inspect it for damage.

Also, it's always good to check all your fuses. I would pay special attention to fuse 2, as it supplies power to a lot of the sensors you're having issues with.

 

The ECU needs to be changed to non SAI ECU, if SAI was deleted. Do you know if ECU was swapped out?

@friday night disco. To be honest with you I don't know but I highly doubt that it's been changed. If that was the problem then would My symptoms just be because of miscommunication between the ecu and the sensors?

 

it's not just a "miscommunication." you will always get errors unless the ecu is reprogrammed to not look for the sai equipment.
in addition, if you're in an area that requires emissions testing then (supposedly) you won't pass if the vin indicates that sai was fitted from the factory but has since been removed.

 

The one other thing I would suggest is to check your ground connections. Last time my friend had his head gaskets replaced, the shop didn't put a nut back on the engine ground strap and all sorts of shenanigans ensued.

 

Thanks for the input folks. So I just got around to checking the fuses and fuse number 2 was completely blown. I'm guessing badd grounding can cause fuse to blow or some other issue?
