Default Help ?!?!? Black smoke :(

OK, I have a 89 200TDi which has a smoking problem. Being a newbie to the TDi ( I've owned several series petrol LWB's and re-built every part at some stage so I'm not totally incapable lol ) I need the best advice I can get.

Could anyone tell me how to determine what the problem may be, and how to find/rectify it... I've been told it may be the boost on the pump, or the turbo dumping too much fuel, or worn/clogged injectors but without spending £'s I don't have I'd like to work out the problem before putting my hand in my moth infested wallet The guy I bought it off said he's had the pump 're-calibrated' but I've a feeling he may have just had it turned up to get more power, could this be it ???

Thanks in advance for any help offered

not sure on diesels, but black smoke is typicaly fuel. the guy that had it before might have richened the mixture to run more boost.

i think all diesels smoke, our powerstroke black smokes when hot rodded and sometimes when pulling a trailer. it usually is hot rodded or pulling a trailer. it seems common

So, any idea where I might get the info needed to attempt to turn down the boost myself ? The process isn't mentioned in my Haynes ( well, what a surprise lol ) and I can't find a link on the net....

I’d be interested in this cure too...although 'laying down a 007 smoke screen' is quite good to get rid of tail-gaters.
It’s an almost embarrassing amount of black smoke when u boot it.

If it smokes at idle you can have a intake that is some what restricted.
If you put your foot on the go pedal and you get smoke the other owner
advanced the injection timing, moved the pump.
The first thing is check the pump timing, after that you will
have to clean the intake black smoke = soot .
It just needs a little TLC.
Good Luck Mike.
If you need this to pass the MOT you can try some bio diesel no smoke.
