Default HELP! Engine failure

Hello, my 2003 petrol V8 discovery 2 has a big problem.

it turns on just fine when cold, but then after driving for about 25 minutes the engine dies, and does not restart again for another hour, when it’s cooled down.

I’ve taken it to 2 garages and run diagnostics, I’m not getting any codes to show camshaft failure, or fuel pump issues… any ideas?

Would really appreciate any help!!

Crankshaft position sensor. Plenty of threads about how to replace it on this forum.

Mollusc is right. I’m surprised that the shops didn’t figure this out. It’s not just a LandRover thing.

Is there anyway to test to the crankshaft and camshaft sensors before buying replacements? The scanner they used at both garages didn’t show any error codes, and then the engine works fine for the first 30 mins.

It’s 99% the Crank Position Sensor. This is a very common failure, when it gets hot it quits. It won’t show a fault until it’s hot. I suppose if you really wanted to you could heat it with a heat gun and see if you have a fault, or connect your scanner to it when it is actually failing. They’re not terribly expensive, just a little finicky to get at to replace.

@jacollins the CPS will almost never throw a code, the Camshaft sensor will. But you need better mechanics CPS failures always present exactly that way on every vehicle, in my case mine just flat out died, in the driveway luckily. Just get a Bosch unit and get it replaced, they are cheap about 30.00 US and it takes about 20 minutes and alot of cursing to install - the connector is in a terrible location.

If you pour a cup of water down the back of the engine on the DS and it restarts, that confirms the CKPS is bad.

A shop should have the ability to measure the crankshaft sensor signal. A mechanic can tell from the signal waveform if the sensor is on the way out.

Thanks guys, this is all really helpful.

would it be wise to replace camshaft sensor at same time as CPS sensor? To be safe?

I have read it could be either, and both have similar symptoms when failing.

but the consensus on here seems to be it’s the COS sensor…

Just replace the crankshaft position sensor (CKPS). In all my years on this and other Discovery forums I don't recall seeing any threads about replacing the camshaft position sensor. There may have been a few, but there are many, many threads about the CKPS.

Replacing the sensor itself is easy. What is frustrating as hell is reaching, disconnecting and then reattaching the connector where it plugs into the wiring harness behind the engine. I can't think any more apparently sadistic act by the people who designed the DII than putting the connector in that location. The harness side could have easily been made just a few inches longer to make it easy to reach a little lower down from under the truck.

Coincidentally, just a few hours ago forum member HopeItsNotAMoneyPit posted a couple pics of the CKPS connector that will help you understand what the connector looks like and how to deal with it.
