I am looking to buy a Discovery II. I am looking at years between 2001 and 2004. I know they are different but still kinda the same. I have read quite a bit about each but would love to have some advice from people that own them. Thanks in advance

There is some difference between 99-02 and 03-04. The 03-04 basically had a facelift and got some new headlights and tail lights. Other than that, they are the same truck.

Stay away from 03's, there were many with oil pump failures.

I know you said 01-04, but consider 99-00 because they have the ability to add center diff. lock (CDL) and that comes in handy if you want to use your Disco off road. Some 01's have it too, but only the ones built early in 2001. The 2004 model has CDL stock, and some consider it the best year of the disco.

Be sure to check if the maintainence has been kept up with. That will make a huge difference down the road. If you can find one that has been well taken care of, you'll have a much better ownership experience.

 

I have an '02, so no CDL, I don't do any "heavy" off-roading, or have enough bad weather up here and don't think I'll ever really need it (famous last words).

My best advice would also be to find one that's been well taken care of and you will be happy, just be sure to continue the good maintenance habits or your beloved Rover will quickly turn against you.

 

Thanks for the insight. I do live in the midwest where we get plenty of snow so the CDL would probably be a good idea. Are there any other major things i should look for. As far as the engines go do they all have major problems around 100000, or is this just the people that bitching that has problems?

 

Have you read through the write up section yet?
About all we will hear on here is problem trucks.
Expect head gaskets in the 80-100k range, so if you get one with over 100k that should be taken care of already.
Read the write up section, that covers alot.
Take your time and test drive as many as you can.

how much you want to bet that the coolant has never been changed. For the past 7 years the dexcool has been eating away at the head gaskets. I bet they blow within 40k miles. And what about the price? Is the seller out of his mind? phil

 

I bet the seller has never had a disco on his lot before and knows next to nothing about them. He thinks he has a diamond and really its a ticking time bomb. On the other hand I noticed that they specified NO Warranty and didn't mention giving one anywhere so maybe they are just hoping for a sucker to come along. Looks pretty though.
