Question Help on timing cover replacement?

I've got parts on order for the timing cover job including water pump, but am wondering if someone can help with the lrt-12-90 tool? Is this really necessary to align the woodruff key as shown in the manual? Doesn't seem like you would need it. Any other hints? I've been searching but not able to find an answer. Thanks!

I didn't have much trouble getting the cover back on, just allign them prior to install. The key should be at top dead center on the crank, so just make sure it is on the pump as well, and work it on. Watch the gasket on the pass side. Mine did not line up, and I had to move it over and hold it while I started a couple of the capscrews...

with the water pump off, bolt the cover to the motor (few threads in) through the missing water pumps bolt holes with the extra long bolts. It will hold itself semi-correctly while you line up the pump sprocket on the key. OR go to lowes, get 8" long bolts and do the same thing. (i cant remember where I got my super long bolts from)

I will doing this soon too. Does everybody leave the water pump off before putting the front cover back on?

Some water pump bolts can only be fitted once the cover is on the block, other than that I don't think it really matters.

I left the pump off until the cover was on. Makes it a little easier with it being lighter and easier to move around...

Default Retinax LX grease

So I can't find the grease called out in the manual. White lithium or bearing grease on the oil output seal? Thanks.

Are you refering to the grease that goes on the outside of the crankshaft seal, before it is pressed in? Made by Shell? I just used some Mobil1 grease that was in my grease gun for use on the propshafts. It worked fine. I think the instructions are. Fit the crankshaft seal dry on the inside of the seal and grease the outside to aid in pressing it in evenly. I replaced my crankshaft seal while the front cover was on... Only a 2/3 hour job if your slow like me. The trick is isolating the crank so it cannot turn.
