Default How big of a project

Hello,

I am in the market for Land Rover and have my eye on a 2001 Discovery. Truck starts and drives but won't go into drive. Truck is $1500 and needs cosmetics things taken care of but mainly this transmission issue. Is this something that as vague as it sounds is possible to fix? Or is it a transmission replacement? Thank you for your help.

Whit

Mileage? History of the owners, work done, what was replaced? As far as transmission, any idea if it may just be a linkage issue - does the shifter allow it to move through the gears all the way up and down?

Others may have more specifics - but a replacement tranny can be had and bolted in for a few hundred dollars, but assuming you work that out - what about the rest of the truck?

1500 seems high.
saying that, I bet your stop light switch is busted. it'll prevent a D2 going into drive.

Not going into park could be caused by 2 things:
1. Bad brake pedal switch
2. Bad XYZ switch (M+S lights will be illuminated on dash)

Like somebody previously mentioned, $1500 is high. Do not pay more than $1K.

You said it starts and drives, but wont go into drive. Are you saying only reverse? Not sure what you mean.

At this point all I know is it will go into reverse and not drive. Owner has a 2004 transmission to go into it.

Has 120,000 miles. Owner got it on a trade, so not much information coming from there. He does has a 2004 discovery transmission to go into it. I just don't want to get into something too crazy of course if you buy cheap you never know what you will get.

I wrote a version of this yesterday but it never showed up...

120,000 miles, guy got it in a trade so not much information coming from him. It has the normal wear and tear. Needs interior freshening, and paint is chipping away. Truck does go into all gears but DRIVE.

Everything around here seems high. Cheapest I have found within 3 hours of me is $1,000 but it needs to be completely rewired and needs some other things.
