CDL is certainly nice. I like mine. But with a working Traction Control system you’d need to be in a pretty serious off road condition to know any difference.

Yeah, I don't have an actual working traction control system... )) but even if I did, I would still want a real CDL. I don't even understand that decision on their part to get rid of it. Then, they brought it back in '04, so somebody there was able to make the right call. In any case, I think I just found an old CDL from '97 (Disco 1) and need to see if it'll work.
Also, there is an upgrade kit, which will turn an existing non-cdl t-case into a cdl one, but that kit is like over $700. On Luck8 I think.

 

You can buy a CDL transfer case (they were in all of them from 99-01) and swap the nose off of it in to yours without removing the transfer case. 97 D1 linkage will work but not as elegant as 04 shifter cable.

 

Not all 01’s. Mines an ‘01 and it didn’t come with one.
It seems that LR thought their TC was so good that CDL was no longer needed. I think to a large degree they were correct, but I think CDL does give an extra edge under more extreme conditions.

 

It's about both marketing and purpose. Maybe some cost-cutting savings, though miniscule. You either do or you don't. And this whole bit about oh, we used to, but now we don't, but wait, there is a hidden feature, but you can't really use it, although technically you can, oh no, now you certainly can't, 'cause we deleted it, oh hey now, now you can again, since we re-introduced now - this is all complete bull****. You either do - or you don't. It's either a heavy-duty soccermom crossover OR it's a serious off-road-capable truck (SUV). Either or. So for this, I despise these executives, marketing schmucks and the rest of them for giving us this bull crap.
If it's an urban crossover SUV for moms and dads to drive their kids to soccer and lacross practice and to go to Costco and stuff - yes, you don't need a CDL.
If this is a serious SUV that competes with certain Toyotas (Land Cruiser, Prado, 4Runner, etc.) and few other true SUVs that were still out there in late '90-s and early '00s, then you DO NEED the damn CDL, which you really had all along in the first place.

I have a 99 t-case I'd sell if you pick it up with the correct nose, no linkage tho. cheapest solution there is to find a d1 in a junkyard and go get it yourself. have not heard good things about fitment of the ashcroft kit and don't trust L8 for much more than they will with no uncertainty have the worst website lol

D1 Transfer case will also work. Just have to change the front flange over for the front drive shaft so technically 94-99 D1 then 99-02 D2 (depending on production date or if the TC was replaced say in late 02-03 under warranty), and 04 D2 of coarse.
